Karlsushi at The WAM...

"Just remembered another stand-out system that I should have mentioned above, the NVA room. NVA integrated (which uses a passive pre section of course) driving their new 'Cube' speakers.

Really distinctive and smart-looking little stand-mount speakers (should have taken a photo). Upward-firing bass units and really impressive 'speaker disappearing' trick going on. A lovely natural presentation and one definitely worth checking out for those looking for something a bit different to the usual '2 drivers on the front of a box' stand-mount design. Think they will be on general sale soon at £4.5k. not cheap, but worth looking into if you're in the market for something at that price."

I'm a very recent convert to the NVA family - after years enjoying my Axiom Alchemist I took the plunge and found another level of sound. The customer service and response to questions is far beyond anything I have experienced before (the only people who come close are Lillienthal Berlin - if you want a watch, give them a look). My system now consists of Rega P3 (2005) / Exact / Fono MM Mk5 into the NVA amps then onto Wharfdale Pacific floorstanders. I can definitely live with this for many years.

What to say? I had a fairly modest setup powered by the Cyrus II on Pro Ac floor standers with a.n. other cabling. TBH I was quite happy with it but, following endless hours of reading and listening I still have a modest ( in terms of cost) system. This one however is powered by NVA and is in no way modest in terms of listening experience..... it sparkles way beyond its value. The integrated amp came first followed by the interconnects and the really big improvement thereafter came with the upgrade to speaker cables with the NVA version 6. Where to go from here? The addition of the BMU also brought its sonic influence to bear and then finally the phono and headphone amps. For me the overall description would be clean. I like clean. I hear music and the track subtleties and take joy and enjoyment every time I settle down to new or old tracks. My setup, at the price, really is a delight.

Richard, by email

Started with many other brands - Cyrus, Arcam etc and then heard ap50 mono blocks and realised what I was missing.

Started with NVA AP50s and passive pre-amp kots before trading them in a few years later for some refurbished statement amps (TDS), passive pre and CD player (TTS), sound pipes and LS1. The deal was too good to pass.

The CD has recently expired due to mechanical wear on the mid 90s mechanism and cap failures on mother board but the power supplies, rectifier and dac still work perfectly. Until I decide how to resurrect these components with some form of streamer or other digital input, I’m just using a cheap BT AirPlay streamer from my Apple Music and it still sounds amazing with my Wilmslow Audio speakers (volt and morel drivers).

Give them an audition for sure.

I have been owning an ap 20 since 1989 and it is still working.

On my shelves there have been amps to try at the same price, I also have a triple price but for my ears there is no comparison !! Then now in the last two years because of the covid I had the time to build myself some speakers in the transmission line with KEF kit and so I decided to buy s80 with sl3 cables I have the show biampl !!

Then lately I bought used an ap 30 and cd50 the player has been used very little so it works that it is a show for the ap 30 instead I think I will buy a short full update finally I can only say hurray NVA

I've finally forced myself to stop making the neighbours listen to my music this evening after installing the new speaker cable lengths.
I must ask how much pixie dust and unicorn horn was mixed in, because the system now has a significantly wider, taller and deeper soundstage than yesterday!! I've had a great evening listening to a wide range of tunes, from 1964 Cliff Richard to Linton Kwesi Johnson, Laurie Anderson, Jethro Tull, and revisiting Dark Side Of The Moon. I'm really not sure where this extra lift has come from, but by heck I'm hugely pleased.

Bencat:

Okay just a follow up I collected my NVA P60 on Thursday but that is a very small part of the story but will leave that to other times . When I say I picked up my P60 amp that is probably not that true . After the work NVA has done there is very little of my amp left that is not replaced or new . According to Paul and Mark this is now the equivalent of the current brand new P150 so not really the same little beast i sent back for repair . MY thanks go to Paul and Mark for all their work and help over this little sage they have been all you would ever want as a company backing up their product and making sure the customer is not only happy (which i very much am) but is also treated in a respectful and great way . All I can say is that if you buy from NVA then you have no worries you will be fine

Now to tired to put the P 60 in place with my Quad ESL 57 on Thursday as I collected the amp from Durham and at my age long drives wear me out . So Friday out cam the XTZ P100 and in went the P 60 . Decided to be sensible and once it was playing left playing with Radio Paradise at a low level and just got on with things sticking me head in every now and then to make sure it was still working. Then about 15.30 sat and listened to it . Sound is just what I have been looking for natural and powerful imaging was just so much better than with the XTZ . Strange to relate the NVA sounds very similar to the Croft with a really sweet and powerful midrange and bass what there is of it on the Quads is just right and fits the rest of the sound . It makes music with nice timbre and notes have a texture so you can hear what strings are being used and how they are being played. Vocals are just what I want real voices which are easy to follow and enjoy . Even gave Ace of Spades by Motorhead a little outing and was amazed at how powerful it could sound . The P 60 sounds much better than a P 30 more powerful and more in control . I am very happy and spent most of Friday night listening and then spent a few hours more on Saturday listening again . If you have a pair of Quads in particular the 57 then you really need to hear an NVA amp on the end of them . Richard used the Quad ESL 57 when he was first making the NVA amps and he made an amp that drives them really well and controls them which is not an easy thing to do as I found out to my cost with a series of amps that came and went .

It all started when the curiosity to try something new combined with the temptation presented by the P50/S80 starter system. I owed it to myself, I thought, to give it a try. And hey, I could always get my money back if it wasn’t a serious improvement on the old amplifier. Little did I know what a revelation those two acrylic boxes would be. An order for the Phono 1 followed pretty soon - I needed to hear what I’d been missing from the vinyl collection. A lot, it turned out. I was happy. But the thought started to grow - if the S80 sounded so good, what would the S300 be like? No, I couldn’t - the extra power would be overkill. But the seed had been planted. I needed to know so succumbed to curiosity again and placed the order. It arrived. Blimey, weighs a ton. What does it sound like? The S80 but so much more. More weight, more heft, more presence, more detail. What a fantastic amplifier. I’m very happy once again.

I received the AP10H :) and it is now running, it look very nice, nice finish, minimalist and efficient, the sound is perfect even with a common headphone, it isn’t running for a long time so it shall become more “open” . Thanks again and I let you know soon about the integrated amplifier.

HiFi Pig review of the INT400 integrated amplifier:

Richard Dunn passed away in 2019 but his legacy and products live on with new owners who are keen to maintain many of his core values with regard to amplifier design. Janine Elliot takes a listen to the UK-based company’s INT400 integrated amplifier costing £3500 and coming with its own loudspeaker cables.
