Did a couple of post-punk LP rips this morning:

Wah! 'Nah=Poo - The Art of Bluff' (1981)

Image

Ever hear of The Crucial Three ? A trio of Liverpool-scene hopefuls at the end of the 70's, their names: Julian Cope, Ian McCulloch and Pete Wylie. The immense egos involved couldn't be contained in a single group, so they went their separate ways to stardom. Cope forming The Teardrop Explodes, McCulloch (still in his teens) to Echo and the Bunnymen, with Pete Wylie using the title Wah! in a variety of guises.

'Nah=Poo' was his debut album and it is one of the most skull-crunchingly intense and monumental works to come out of that period. It is HUGE! The Teardrops and Bunnymen pale into weak shadows in comparison. Pete Wylie never became the superstar that he obviously felt that he should have been - and on the strength of this, it's a pity he didn't.

Fischer-Z 'Going Deaf For A Living' (1980)

Image

I remember that OGWT played the song 'Crazy Girl' to a video compiled from old b/w 1940's cartoons. The infectious groove and wacky lyrics hooked me instantly and I had to have this, the second LP from John Watts and his band Fischer-Z. Watts had studied psychology and could write brilliant songs about characters and feelings.

It was a time when the music just flowed ... :violin:

Now doing Tangerine Dream's 'Encore' to get me back down to earth.

All of Liverpool bands of the day occasionally hung out in Kirkland's in Liverpool. It was an old bakery that had converted into an eclectic wine bar. We used to literally rub shoulders
with all of the above, plus the likes of Holly Johnson etc. Their was a real buzz about the place and occasionally they would make the first floor available for live music or DJ sets. It's had a messy history since it's heyday but in it's pomp it was brilliant.

Likewise I never could understand how Wylie didn't make it. One of my few musical regrets is that I swapped a 12in of 7 Minutes to Midnight for a mint Spiral Scratch. while I love the Buzzers, finding any Wah related stuff now at a sensible price is impossible.

Apart from a few obvious tunes Pete Wylie's music doesn't so much float my boat as sink it :(

When David 'Kid' Jensen unexpectedly announced that he was leaving Radio One, a distraught John Peel played 'Come Back' by The Mighty Wah! as a farewell.

Jensen often hung around after his show and would sit in with Peel for fun.
