'Moving Pictures'is an essential album that every self-respecting Rock afficionado just has to have in the collection.
:music-rockon: :music-rockon: Can't really decide between Moving Pictures or Permanent waves :music-rockout: :music-rockout:

Guess I'll just have to have a listen to them both :music-rockon: I've just had a delivery from RareVinyl to fill in the gaps in my early Rush (studio) albums. The recent source and amp upgrades have really inspired my desire to fill in those gaps from 40 years ago.
I find it hard to decide between the two but my favourites by a small margin are the three thich came before. topped by A farewell to kings.

Last listen - The Deafening - Rattlesnake sex show, on public transport through the good value earphones I recently bought.

Steve Reich 'The String Quartets' by the Mivos Quartet (2023)

Image

Brand new, just released and a disc I had been looking forward to with some anticipation. Steve Reich (now 86) once said that he would never write a string quartet but, to his own surprise, he has written three. He himself had the idea of collecting these into a single release performed by (his own choice) American new-music ensemble The Mivos Quartet.

The works are 'WTC 9/11', written with a background of taped voices describing the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York. This is a vivid, unsettling piece where Reich uses the instruments to mirror the inflection of the spoken words. Then the 'Triple Quartet' where the strings play against/with 2 pre-recorded versions of themselves; somewhat reminiscent of the angular stylings of Bartok this is a striking, dynamic piece.
Finally, the masterwork 'Different Trains', a composition that I have got quite obsessed about in recent years. Multiple versions of the quartet play along to a backing tape of train noises and voices that tell the story of the Golden Age of American railways before WW2, the second movement describes the trains that took Holocaust victims to Nazi concentration camps and the third movement shows the railways declining importance in the modern world. I have several versions of this work on CD and this is the first that really competes with the original Kronos Quartet recording. The Mivos players, under the personal guidance of Steve Reich, bring a new depth and inflection to the music and the recording quality is absolutely superb (Deutsche Grammophon - expect no less).

Highly recommended for those who are interested in contemporary Classical and Minimalist music. This album is worth the price of admission just for 'Different Trains' which is also a great place to start for those unfamiliar with his work.

Go try!

Eivind Aarset 4-Tet 'Phantasmogoria' (2021)

Not quite an ECM release but a similarly-styled album from Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset who has appeared on ECM and also as a member of the great Nils Petter Molvaer's band.
This is a superb, adventurous record that sits comfortably in the same category as the likes of Terje Rypdal and David Torn. Experimental but melodious 21st Century Jazz with elements of Radiohead-influenced Post-Rock.

Steve Hackett 'Genesis Revisited: live at The Royal Albert Hall ' (2013)

Image

I have several (most) of Steve Hackett's Genesis Revisited albums and the series of live concert recordings that he has put out in the last decade. This is possibly the best of the lot!

A 2CD/1DVD set of SH and his band recreating an extensive selection from the six (was it only six? Gabriel did six as well) studio albums he made with Genesis.

Hackett is the 'official' keeper of the classic Genesis flame and his versions are flawlessly played and true to the spirit of the originals. Vocals are more than adequately handled by Nad Sylvan who has a familiar Collins-timbre in his voice. Also guests like Ray Wilson and John Wetton join in to help.

If you love (as I do) the older Genesis catalogue then you will adore this album. Superb playing, excellent recording and a feast of nostalgia.

I know what I like ....

The Doors 'The Broadcast Collection' (2022)

Image

A band that has been nagging at me of late for some attention are The Doors. For some reason I have picked up all the studio LP's (again) and several other oddities including this cheap 5CD set of recorded-for-radio concerts, some of which have been worming their way into my subconscious.

Disc 1&2 are an afternoon and evening session in Stockholm from 1968. The group are on fire here, tight and focused with excellent recording quality.
Disc 3, New York 1969. Mostly from 'The Soft Parade'. Recording is not great but it is interesting to hear the group playing this material which was heavily augmented with other musicians in the studio.
Disc 4: the notorious 1970 Seattle gig with a drunken and unpredictable Morrison going nova on stage. Fascinating and the SQ is great.
Disc 5: Chicago 1972. Poor sound for the remaining trio playing after JM's early death.

I have had a major obsession with the Doors before and now I am concentrating more on the musicians Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore. Current project is reading their separate autobiographies and listening anew to the 'Other Voices' and 'Full Circle' albums.

Anyhow, for those fond of this incredible group - get hold of this set (if you see it cheap) as discs 1,2 & 4 are well- worth your time.

Break on through (to the other side).
