Coverdale was the best DP vocalist. Lord and Paice are in this classic early Whitesnake line up.
Berni Marsden was a great guitarist in the White snake line up.

Gillan was my preferred DP vocalist
I tend to see the different phases of bands like Purple as more of a brand than a band. I like all the versions to some extent but I don't really compare Blackmore to Bollin to Morse, they are all very good guitarists. Likewise Gillan & Coverdale are two great singers. Machine Head & Burn are probably two of my favorite LP's, when I'm in that sort of mood.

Given all the chopping and changing between Purple, Rainbow, Sabbath, MSG etc I think it's a shame that:

Coverdale never played with Iommi
Gillan never played with Schenker
Osbourne never played with Blackmore
Dio never played with Marsden

PS given the personnel I tend to look at Whitesnake Mk1 as Purple Mk 5, but hey ho.

With the possible exception of Gillan/Schenker I am struggling to see these as good matches from a musical perspective. What turned out to be a good match, though very short lived, was Coverdale/Jimmy Page. A very good album resulted and IMO is by far the best thing JP has done outside Zeppelin. It really came about because of the emergence of grunge and the decline of hair metal. The astute Coverdale saw the writing on the wall and who better to team up with. This infuriated Robert Plant who saw Coverdale as a poor imitation of himself in Zeppelin's hay day. I am convinced that Coverdale singing Zeppelin songs was the reason for his short lived partnership with Page. He did not want a Zep reunion and this did not go down well with John Paul Jones.

It was a time of big egos and personality clashes, some of which have eased with the passing of time. Following the previous slanging matches Dio teamed up with Iomi and Butler before his death and Coverdale and Blackmore are now on good terms, the former stating that life is too short. From what I have picked up from interviews there is still no love lost between Blackmore and Gillan. Likewise between Schenker and Phil Mogg, responsible for the classic influential UFO albums in the 70s. A reunion after a twenty year split ended up with a punch up on stage in Manchester. I travelled to Newport to see the band the following night to be met with a notice saying the gig was cancelled because the singer had a bad throat. The truth came out later.

Meanwhile ... Deep Purple have continued with a fairly hamonious (and stable) lineup since the mid 90's and this album is an absolute triumph.

Deep Purple 'Now What ?1' ( 2013)

Image

Beginning with a quiet, introspective and folky riff from the bass and transforming into a rolling rocker 'A Simple Song' is a great opener and sets the scene for a varied and accomplished record by a bunch of guys who can play pretty well any and every style they like. This includes an ELP/Emerson-tribute in 'Uncommon Man.

The recording and production are immaculate - as is the playing. Songs are well-constructed and Gillan is a lyricist who still has plenty to say. Most of the band were approaching 70 at this point, but you don't hear any signs of rust in the music.

A truly excellent album that should appeal to all those who like Classic Rock of quality and distinction.

Agreed the Page Coverdale collab is really good. In terms of Coverdale with Iommi, why not, Gillan and Dio both worked quite well with him. I agree Ozzie with Blackmore probably wouldn't work, but it would have been fun to watch in a UFO reunion sort of way..

In complete contrast to the Purple fest elsewhere.

Stockhausen: Gesang der Jünglinge & Kontakte, two rather challenging pieces which i quite like, but it turns out that the dog doesn't!

A band with over forty years at stability, a lot easier with three.

Rush - Grace under pressure

The current fixation on Dinosaur Heavy 70's bands is entirely my fault. Sorry, guilty as charged.

As soon as I'm out of this phase then 'normal service will be resumed' with my customary selection of electro-jazz-classical-ambient weirdness.

You have been warned!
