Yes 'Mirror to the Sky' (2023)

Image

... and the latest offering from Steve Howe's Yes is in and - it's pretty damn good!

Complex flowing basslines a la Chris Squire? Check.
Breathy, stratospheric vocals like Jon Anderson? Check.
Precision playing and close-harmony singing? Check.
Long-form tracks about the spiritual universe and caring for the planet? Check.

All the ingredients are here and when you settle down and crank up the volume you are transported back through moment of Yes history, with a series of reminders of past glories.

Where 'The Quest' tried too hard to impress with its 'We sound like Yes' attitude, this IS Yes, reborn and renewed.

Points of criticism are the lack of real high-tempo workouts (okay, Howe is in his 70's) and Geoff Downes' keyboards play a subdued, secondary role.

Plus points: Howe flies the Yes flag with pride. Billy Sherwood pumps the bass with THAT distinctive sound and feeling that has him channeling the Master. Jay Schellen has been subbing for Alan White (RIP) for so long that the changeover is unnoticeable. Jon Davison has that Yes-sound as well and is the perfect singer for this music.

Overall 'Mirror' is an excellent and varied album that flows well, sounds great and leaves you wanting more.

The answer is ... Yes!

A very decent album on first hearing. Not sure if I prefer it to The Quest which was a grower.

Ambient? Jazz? Ambient Jazz? Electro-Jazz? Electronica? Not a bloody clue:  It's interesting though, and rather gorgeous in places.; Mr Mibbler is apparently, three people and, according to NAXOS... They are three musketeers who know their trade, all highly acclaimed among Norwegian producers, musicians and music lovers. They used to carve their verses from the noblest of woods. Polish the refrains, again and again ‘till it shone like the purest gold’. They got bored with the middle of the road, stumbled off the beaten path and entered the wasteland. They are Mr. Mibbler.

Actually, they're three "highly regarded" producers, from Oslo.

I recognised a couple of the collaborators on the album, one of whom is Anja Garbarek, daughter of Norwegian jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek, who has made some superb recordings with The Hilliard Ensemble.
