I had completely forgotten how much I admire Deep Purple with their mix of infectious grooves, Heavy-Rock posturings and Classical-infused musicianship. Hunting around on Amazon I found a selection of live CDs dirt cheap and am going through them (roughly) chronologically.

Recent years have found me more and more heading for live albums as a true portrait of what a band were capable of and how they grew.

The earliest here is a 1970 BBC concert of a pre-'In Rock' group issuing a warning about the monster they were about to unleash. Young, hungry and downright dangerous. This mood continues as the band ploughs new ground through 71 and 72, blowing away audiences in Europe and the US.

These are all 'official' releases but the SQ of the original recordings can vary - mostly done for radio transmission. However the energy and excitement makes up for that. 'In Concert 72' is a reconstructed & expanded version of Disc 2 from the BBC set and noticeably improved.

Two sets from the 2013/4 'Now What !?' tour have the band, 40 years on, STILL blowing the roof off venues with power and passion (and better recording!). The Rome set is a stunner and I haven't even got to the Budokan album yet.

The Made in Japan album for me is a total classic, and a complete example of Purple at their best. 😉

Berni Marsden was a great guitarist in the White snake line up.

Gillan was my preferred DP vocalist

Mine was a live one, with the rather fine group Adharma.
Can't remember which song was the final one of the set, though.
