Out of here is also very good.

I have a playlist that is made up exclusively from tracks by Felt, Denim, Corduroy and Suede.

To get some respite from hammering my way through the entire Nektar back-catalogue I have filled out my collection with the EP's that Olafur Arnalds recorded between 2008-2016. The CD's come in nice card sleeves, some with a set of art-prints included, and are also available as 10" vinyl (with free WAV downloads).

Arnalds started out in Iceland as a drummer for several Hardcore bands (the same alt-rock scene that nurtured Johann Johannsson) and switched over to more atmospheric work inspired by the Chopin LP's his grandmother used to play to him. His compositions are mostly a mix of piano, strings and electronics - all used to great effect to create music of sparse, emotional, yearning beauty.

'Found Songs' is mainly piano - a challenge to write, record and mix a new work every day for a week with each track put out on Twitter that day. He repeated this exercise for 'Living Room Songs' which had films of daily sessions with string players issued on Youtube - this collection is utterly gorgeous and is closely related to the 'Another Happy Day' soundtrack.

Another highpoint is 'Dyad 1909', a commission from a dance company that is more electronic and intense. Basically everything Arnalds has released is of an incredibly high standard and these EP's, each with a running-time of under 30 minutes, are a triumph of quality over quantity.

I’ve been through this with a fine tooth comb weeding out shite like Wham, Maria Carey etc. Even though we’re being cheesy, we do have our limits.
