Not for the faint of heart - check them on YouTube (Longthorne Shotgub, Bish Bash Bosh, Stepped Into The Building all excellent, but I recommend "Whirleybird" as a starting point).

I've been absent for too long, sorry about that. Will try and make up for lost time by boring you all senseless with the stacks of used LP's I have acquired recently.

Troubled times have had me seeking solace in the old and familiar, music that surrounded me as a teenager:

Wishbone Ash

Image

I had a cassette of Argus way back when and this is rediscovery of a great guitar band. I particularly enjoy 'New England' which is superb.

Barclay James Harvest

Image

Yorkshire-band BJH were everywhere in the 70's and 80's, nowadays you never hear anyone mention them. Some great classic rock/prog here although they later followed Genesis into a poppier direction. The live albums are particularly good with grittier and more direct performances than in the studio.

What else?
Strawbs, Moody Blues, Blue Oyster Cult, Mountain. A long trip down memory lane and it's a fine place to visit!

Album of the day:

The Moody Blues 'To Our Children's Children's Children'

Image

The earlier Moodies albums were crafted to sound their best on 60's and 70's record players. For that time they were superbly recorded to make even the humblest little hifi sound great. And they still do!

I have the whole set on CD, but the old LP's are just an incredible sonic experience. Real music made by real musicians from an age where the music meant something.

Paul's Amazing (ly Boring) Trivia Spot.

That album played a role in sporting diplomacy and was the first album by a Western pop group to be played in China during the Mao Zedong era.

In April 1971, English table tennis player Trevor Taylor was invited to play in China as part of a diplomatic mission centred around the sport. En route to the tournament in Red China, he purchased a copy of the record in Singapore and had his interpreter play it in public.

He remembers, "They weren't sure about it at first; there are only six records over there and they are all political.

" It was the first time the audience had heard Western popular music, with no previous exposure to Elvis Presley The Beatles, or any of the artists those of us in the West simply took for granted."

It was also one of the albums listened to (on cassette) by the crew of Apollo 15 in 1971.

I wasn't a big fan of Dire Straits back in the good old days, although I did have 'Making Movies' on a cassette and an admiration for 'Love Over Gold'.

In these high-pressure, AI-driven times it's refreshing to hear an unassuming bunch of guys just playing a bunch of tunes and sounding like they're actually enjoying themselves.

Fitting in nicely alongside fellow Yorkshiremen BJH, all the way from darkest Harrogate, the band 'Wally'.

Image

They released two albums in the early 70's with this, the first, being co-produced by 'Whispering' Bob Harris and Rick Wakeman (!).

Soundwise it's a mix of melodic proggy rock with some folk and country influences. Very comparable to mid 70's Barclay James Harvest.
