I had that Magazine LP. I lived with my parents at the time. I’d already been caught out in style by the infamous intro to Plaistow Patricia off the Ian Dury ‘New Boots And Panties!’ record.
I didn’t bargain for ‘I will drug you and f**k you on the permafrost’ coming out of the stereogram, whilst mum was sitting drinking a cuppa on the armchair opposite. She was not best pleased.

On first listen, it doesn't feel like the sort of song where that line is going to make an appearance...

Throwing any pretence of street-cred musical taste out of the window ...

Enya 'Watermark' (1988)

Image

Listening to a couple of Maire/Moya Brennan's solo efforts, which are quite far removed from family-band Clannad, I was struck by how similar they sounded to the work of har baby sister Enya (Maire is the eldest of 9 children, Enya is number 6) and decided it was time to investigate properly.

I have occasionally considered getting some of Enya's music in the past, but have always been put off by the air of syrupy New-Ageness that her image encapsulates. It appears that I am now ready to take the plunge and where better place to start than with her mammoth breakthrough record 'Watermark' and the single 'Orinoco Flow'. Firstly I am struck with the similarities in sonic palette to some of Vangelis's releases (lke 'Chariots of Fire' or 'Direct'), Seems like Enya had access to the same hardware as the Master and also knew how to use it!.

Her trademark sound is dense, layered vocals, sweeping liquid synths and ethnic/celtic percussion patterns. When you are in the mood this is a wonderful mix that you can sink into and just allow yourself to be carried along. Having got almost all of her solo output CD's for next to nothing, I'll be flowing along in her wake for a while yet.

Rock n Roll ? No. :snooty:

The Stampeders - New Day (1974)
An unfortunate victim of my late 70s LP purge. I must have been a fecking idiot!
Never mind. It's back now via Apple Music and track 2 “Marigold" is still a complete, utter, bleed'n ear worm

King Crimson 'Islands' (1971) 200g vinyl 2013

Image

And my next collector-obsessive vinyl phase presents itself: Reacquiring all of King Crimson's studio albums from 'Court' to 'Perfect Pair' on LP. Starting-point is the thoroughly undervalued 1971 release 'Islands' with a short-lived lineup featuring Boz Burrell on vocals and bass (which Fripp taught him how to play.

This is Crimson's most Jazz and Classical-influenced album but is full of subtlety and melody. My old vinyl copy was the original Island edition which included a poster but this new pressing is simply gorgeous, silent in the background and silky SQ.

Next up ....

King Crimson 'Beat' (1982)

Image

For the first time ever, a Crimson lineup actually stayed together to record a second (and third) album. 'Beat' continues and refines the approach of 'Discipline' with the Fripp / Belew / Levin / Bruford collective tightening up to create a completely new musical vocabulary.

This LP is a favourite of mine but is notorious for an argument between Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew which resulted in Fripp walking out, leaving the others to complete and mix the album without him.

Still great and another quality vinyl reissue. :guiness;

Trivia time:

Bill Bruford is the drummer on both 'Beat' and 'The Yes Album'.

After Peter Banks left Yes, they asked Robert Fripp to join but he declined, thinking that he would take over control of the group (which was actually what they were hoping for).
Steve Howe came along and the rest is history.
