Holst 'The Planets' (1974)
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
conducted by George Hurst

Image

My very first orchestral concert was when, at the age of 11, I was taken to see the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform Gustav Holst's 'Planets Suite' in Plymouth. A formative experience of the power and beauty of Great Music. The BSO recorded the work at around the same time and it became one of the first albums I had on cassette. A work that I grew up with and a foundation-stone for my love of music.

Almost a half-century later and the Gods have allowed me to find a vinyl copy of this same recording and I can relive the glories that it brought me as an adolescent.

This version has gained some notoriety amongst 'Planets' fans as a vivid and lively performance that captures the majesty and mystery of the work.

Ah, the memories .....

The Planets (not BSO) is one of only about 25 classical records I own. Superb.

Cozy Powel used to play his drum solo to a backing track of Mars. He did so at a Whitesnsnake concert I was at in the 80s. It later appeared on the Emerson, Lake & Powel album.

I have the Emerson, Lake and Powell album and it's pretty good. King Crimson also did 'Mars' on 'In the Wake of Poseidon' and you can hear its influence on quite a few other prog bands.
