'Music for the Masses' is a finely-crafted, monumental blast of electronics that paved the way for the world-conquering 'Violator'.

The Icicle Works 'The Icicle Works' (1983)



Epic! That one word completely sums up this, the debut LP from Liverpool trio The Icicle Works. One of a stream of seriously-talented groups that crawled out of the Mersey at the time (must have been something in the water). This record is full of huge songs, most notably 'Love is a Wonderful Colour' and 'Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)' but every track is nothing short of great.

Amazing that three young musicians are responsible for this vast and passionate wall of sound. An example of reaching for the stars and damn nearly getting there too !

I saw them in concert around this time and they were a blistering hurricane on stage.
