I continue to flip flop from one genre to another but right now I am enjoying Arvo Part a lot. His compositions reward multiple listening sessions.

Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia 'Nightwatch' (1984)

Nostalgia trip. In the mid-80's me and a few mates would drive into Leeds at the weekend and see Jazz groups that were performing in a couple of clubs, amongst others: Bill Bruford's Earthworks, Ian Carr's Nucleus and Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia.

My current mood of melodic/jazzy has led me back to all three of these acts, not least due to the Colosseum / Jon Hiseman / Allan Holdsworth connection. Drummer Hiseman was the husband of the late Barbara T. and gave a solid backbone to the band.

The Nightwatch LP is a reissue of 'Pure Fantasy' which had just been released when I saw her. Stellar playing by all concerned and overall a sound that has weathered the years well.

Barbara's best-known work is the haunting soundtrack to 'A Touch of Frost' but the Paraphernalia group was capable of kicking serious ass with style.

Damn hard to find but I managed to pick up a stack of her earlier CD's from Germany on eBay.

Birth Control 'Hoodoo Man' (1972)

Quite possibly the ugliest, most tasteless album cover I have ever seen. Fortunately the music is of better quality.

A long-running formation from the German Krautrock movement, Birth Control are solid and tight here on their second LP with a keyboard-driven sound that is not dissimilar to the likes of Greenslade and Uriah Heep.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Rampen (apm: alien pop music), their latest LP, and it's good, not as good as Silence is sexy, but not far off.
