Re: Your last listen
It isn't often that an album gives me shivers and goosebumps on first listen - but this just did ....
Phoebe Bridgers 'Punisher' (2020)
Ordering CDs online, sometimes you just come short of hitting the free P&P threshold and so I usually check out a shop's Sale list to see if there's anything just to fill the gap and effectively become a freebie.
One such episode threw up the name Phoebe Bridgers which I recognised as being a guest vocalist (along with Taylor Swift) on the latest release from The National. Worth a punt, let's see.
'Punisher' is a dreamy, melancholic listen on the surface but Bridgers' vivid tales of emotion and sensation grab you by the neck and just pull you into her strange world.
Soft, unusual and understated arrangements coupled with a clear open production make for a truly exceptional record.
Forget the likes of Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey. You really NEED to hear Phoebe Bridgers!

Re: Your last listen
Just tucked away the 1975 Previn version of Carmina Burana, and trying - for my first time ever - Tim Buckley's "Greetings From L.A." (the 1979 reissue).
Definitely glad I spent £1.25 on this today

The Church 'The Hypnogogue' (2023)
Forty (!) years ago my heart was stolen by the shimmering psychedelic sounds of The Church's second album 'The Blurred Crusade'. Here we are in the present with a new album that has the same trademarks: jangly guitars, heartfelt lyrics, the cynical drawl of Steve Kilbey. It is as if you have walked into someone else's LSD trip (man!).
Incredibly, The Church sound more like themselves than they have done for ages - despite Kilbey being the only remaining member from the classic lineup. His main sideman nowadays is Ian Haug - once a driving force behind mighty Aussie rockers Powderfinger. This isn't 'Starfish' though, there is a (vague) conceptual storyline and the band plough through styles varying from ambient to sonic-attack. But it is still The Church being the weird and wonderful beast it has always been.
Thoroughly recommended (for the adventurous)!

Re: Your last listen
I'm exploring this YouTube channel -
THE FIRST TAKE https://www.youtube.com/@The_FirstTake
("A microphone and a white studio.
And 1 rule.
You’ve got 1 TAKE.
Perform anything you like.
Show us everything you’ve got for that 1 moment.")
The majority of acts are Japanese at the moment (so many new sounds to hear), but they have an "international" set including vids by Avril Lavigne and Harry Styles.
I have to admit I've become a little bit of a fan of this lot - ATARASHII GAKKO!
