The Durutti Column 'Short Stories for Pauline'

Image

Vini Reilly recorded this album in 1983 but Factory Records boss Anthony Wilson insisted that he go back into the studio and rework the track 'Duet' into a full-length neo-classical piece. That then got released as the fourth Durutti album 'Without Mercy' in 1984. Only as late as 2012 did 'Short Stories' finally get issued and it is a polished gem of delicate, elegant music that could only be the Durutti Column.

Vini Reilly's life could be entitled 'How NOT to have a career in the music industry' and he was plagued by misfortune and misunderstanding - including a long-running legal battle about him actually writing most of Morrissey's debut album 'Viva Hate'. Sadly, Reilly suffered a stroke in 2011 which left him unable to play the guitar with his former mastery.

The Durutti Column back-catalogue is occasionally patchy with attempts at poppier and more electronic sounds at times, but many of the albums contain a uniquely quiet atmosphere generated by Reilly's classically-trained guitar and piano. 'Short Stories for Pauline' is certainly worth seeking out for those who enjoy gentle things and music as Art.
