The Durutti Column 'Obey the Time' (1990)

Image

An album I have pretty well completely ignored up to now, this was Vini Reilly's final release on the Factory label before it imploded under the weight of massive financial mismanagement. This is basically Vini on his own, going back to experimenting with electronics, dub stylings and drum computers as he had also done on 'The Guitar and Other Machines'.

'Obey the Time' (a line from Shakespeare's Othello) is an album of glorious restraint where crystalline flurries of guitar flutter over simple beats and electronic blankets. This was the era of House and Madchester and here is the Durutti's answer to the drug-driven club world of the 90's.

Chill out, baby. :happy-bouncyyellow:

The Durutti Column are a band that I regularly return to. A sound and vision that rejects commerciality and mainstream influences, Vini just being Vini and doing what he wants to - a life dedicated to music.

Back in 1980, I was into Joy Division, The Cure and all the New Wave stuff I could find. There was a review in 'Sounds' of a new Factory LP in a sandpaper sleeve that was totally different to everything else. Me, being me, I just had to have a copy. A friend was going into Derby that afternoon and I asked him to pop into R.E.Cords to get one for me.

He came back with the album in an extra plastic sleeve as the sandpaper was seriously rough and abrasive. Putting it on we heard birdsong, a hugely monotonous drum-machine and then THAT guitar, chiming in with heavenly patterns that were more abstract jazz than the snarling punk that was expected.

This was one of those life-changing moments when you know you will never listen to music in the same way again. The Durutti Column remain a secret love and guilty pleasure.

The Eden House 'Timeflows EP' (2012)

Image

The Eden House is a band formed of ex-members of Fields of the Nephilim and other Goth-Rock acts - vocals are provided by a rotating cast of haunting ladies (including Anathema's Lee Douglas) and the sound is a heady mix of power and serenity.

On 201`2's 'Timeflow' mini-album they are joined by Simon Hinkler (Sisters of Mercy / The Mission) who applies his own distinctive guitar to the mix. Here's the track 'Neversea', strap yourself in and prepare to be blown away.....
