Ulver 'Messe I.X–VI.X' (2013)

Don't know quite what to make of this one, usually I'm a sucker for Classical/Rock crossover projects but this one has me shivering and asking what the hell do they put in the water in Norway - is it the mighty fjords or the endless winter nights full of ghosts and spectres? God know.

Ulver started out as a deep, dark Death Metal outfit but evolved rapidly into intense Prog-metal pioneers utiilising studio techniques and increasing amounts of synthetics to create wondrous soundscapes. 'Messe' was a commission from a Norwegian Arts Festival for them to work with an orchestra and come up with something unique.

So they did: imagine a work that floats in between Philip Glass and Arvo Part with huge electronic effects and Post-rock crescendos worthy of Godspeed You Black Emperor or Mogwai. Channel that through an unsettling dose of religious fervour and add a blast of Doom-Rock intensity on the side. Then you're getting close.

Weird ... but after a few listens it might just be wonderful.

The Taking of Pelham 123 soundtrack. I recently saw the film again and find the music blood pumpingly good.

The Grateful Dead - Cornell 5/8/77

This 'Deadhead's favourite' live set makes a nice place to start, if you're thinking of checking on the dead...
