A band that really triggers my obsessive-record-collector side is Nektar. Their 70's output combines the melodic accessibility of Supertramp, the spaced-out trippiness of Pink Floyd and the classic hard-rock drive of Deep Purple. The later albums are a bit patchy but the 3 LP's I have just snapped up via Discogs are a joy to have (again).

Nektar 'A Tab in the Ocean' (1972)

Nektar 'Sunday Night at London Roundhouse' (1974)

Ladies and gentlemen, Damen und Herren, Mesdames et Messieurs,
Caballeros and Horsewomen of the world. I give you the fantastic Nelly and her performing elephants'
An extraordinary exhibition of animal dexterity from the jungles of darkest Africa!

The elephant's tusk is very valuable, but, an elephant is very hard to catch.
Elephants are extremely fond of oranges, of which they consume an enormous quantity.

Nektar 'Recycled' (1975)

Had this been released as the follow-up to 'Remember the Future' then it would probably have cemented Nektar's reputation in the USA and made megastars out of them. However the more European-orientated 'Down To Earth' sat in-between and had slowed their stateside momentum.

'Recycled' was the last album from the original lineup and also features synth-work from Larry Fast (Synergy, Peter Gabriel). It is an intense, powerful album with Cinemascope production and a full choir on backing vocals. Again the theme is a sci-fi concept, this time about saving the planet (which we haven't managed to do yet).

I had this as a teenager and found it way too OTT back then - but it has transformed into a nostalgic blast from the past.

Now spinning on dizzyness-inducing splatter vinyl. :happy-smileyflower:
