A welcome return to Manchester last week for the prodigiously talented guitarist Simon McBride and his band. I first saw him years ago when he hardly said boo to a goose on stage, but his sublime talents were clear and obvious to the meagre crowd watching. Fast forward 15 years to Manchester's Deaf Institute and he has developed into a much more confident onstage performer. Touring the world as Deep Purple's guitarist has helped no end, and the crowd was swelled by the DP connection. He's probably my favourite current guitarist at the moment.

Ultimate Leppard at the Patriot, Crumlin. Another excellent cover band. With Black Angus in Barry cancelled plan B came into operation, Def Leppard for AC/DC.
