3 before bedtime

Unread post by ArloFlynn »

3 before bedtime.

(A bit like 3 before 8 at Wigan Casino, but not strickly ‘Northern’ and they vary).
It is something I used to do before I went to bed when I was a single chap some 15 years ago.
And now the kids are older, I am going to resume the practice.

Tonight before bed I will listen to.. (on Youtube, as I am at work)

1 – Me and Bobby McGee – Janis Joplin. I have recently been re-acquainted with Jannis after many years. Magnificent stage persona, she interviewed really well too. Featuring quite regular on ‘The Dick Cavett’ show and often off her face.

2 – Christ’s entry into Govern – Trembling Bells. I Don’t know much about them or this song, but it kind of uses a few tricks in the folk book to sound both old and modern.

3 – Who knows where the time goes? – Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention. The ‘subliminal’ version featuring the meandering guitar of Richard Thompson.

Nighty night - Kevin.

3 before bedtime tonight: Savvy's 3. No1. I have dabbled with the Dead in the past. But never got any further. Maybe I shall dabble deeper. They have a larhe back cat.
No2.didn't really hit the nose this one. American country has never really done much for me. However, there was a program on bb4 a while back about Blue grass at the beeb that had me hooked for 60 mins
No3. Liked this a lot. Alt Country. Reminded me of the Fat white family, i think they are called. Bonny Pince Billy etc ( he does a vetsion too). Slightly Mazzy Star esque.

Nighty night.

No3 - meant to say it reminds me of the Handsome Family, not the Fat White Family. Two very different bands.

Will check them out.

Bonnie Prince Billy is (the main) part of Palace Music and he also goes under the name Will Oldham.

I am going to have to track some more of this 'Bonny Prince Billy' chappie.

3 before bedtime –

1 – It was a very good year – Frank Sinatra. Yes, I know, but perhaps one of the great deliveries?
I like the ‘Sands’ version, his voice is magical, but prefer the power of the studio.
A friend of mine sometime late 80’s, was visiting NY for a week and happened upon ‘Sinatra’ Live at Carnegie Hall. Bought a ticket on the door and walked in!

2 – A good year for the roses – Elvis Costello (not penned by he) but I like this song and his voice makes it sound very English new wave, rather than American Country.

3 – Stranger in the house – Rachel Sweet. ‘’fool Around’’ Album was fine Stiff offering from ’78. ‘Stranger’ was written by Elvis Costello. I was into the punk/New wave at that time but somehow Rachel Sweet fitted really well. ‘Stranger’ ended the album well too.

Nighty night.

My three before bedtime has been set out be the fact that tomorrow morning, they'll be announcing a Genesis tour (well, Mike, Tony & Phil, probably Phil's son on drums, and Darryl).

So, in honour of this 'event', I've been scouring YouTube for great Genesis live performances, and have watched the Cage medley from the 'Mama' Tour; Firth of Fifth and Los Endos from the 'W&W' tour. Those three should prevent me sleeping...

'Night all!
