This strike's me as a slightly different but complimentary thread to Grumptim's 'Band's You tried but couldn't get into' thread - the ones you adored when you were younger but have fallen by the wayside in your pecking order - or you've come to simply reassess and found wanting - as you've got older. I'll start:
Led Zeppelin (and a few more of those 70's behemoths who peddled their bloated cock rock - tin helmet at the ready)
Yes (was there really a time I thought Tales From the Topographic Ocean was actually good?!)
Portishead (yawn, yawn, yawn...)
I'll leave it there for the time being otherwise I'll be here for hours and I'm supposed to be working from home...

Re: Bands/Artists You've Grown Out of
My trouble is that I find myself coming back to artists that I had forgotten about / ignored for years, only to get all enthusiastic about them again and finding a new level of appreciation.
This year that has happened (so far) with: Pink Floyd, The Enid. Sonic Youth, Nektar, Shadowfax and Gentle Giant.
When I have had major clear-outs of unloved albums in the past it has usually resulted in instant regret and gradual reacquisition of many of the disposed-of discs.
Hopeless case.

Re: Bands/Artists You've Grown Out of
And Jazz, in general. I had totally stopped listening to Jazz and shoved the whole collection into boxes in the attic. They resided there for several years.
Without warning, my tastes took a major left-turn a couple of months back and now all I want to listen to is Jazz; Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Mingus etc.
Haven't had the urge to put on any Klaus Schulze for a long time - but he will be back, I'm sure of that.
A lot of the neglected punky 80's stuff came back as well in the summer. Sonic Youth unexpectedly turned out to be fascinating, Firehose and Husker Du got played again.
There are a load of Chris Rea discs in the loft. Not sure if he'll be back in fashion though. Don't have any current interest in Genesis - or Prog in general.
But - next month could be Zappa, Abba and The Clash for all I know....

Lots of baggy, shaggy, indie bands. I'll spare their feelings and my blushes.

I can confess to most of the above, though happily I have never had a purge of my collection.Fretless wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 1:31 pm My trouble is that I find myself coming back to artists that I had forgotten about / ignored for years, only to get all enthusiastic about them again and finding a new level of appreciation.

As with every statement there is always an exception. In this case I absolutely loved the Smiths. Now I can't abide the sound of them. Probably nothing to do with the music. Marr is still a damn fine guitarist but good as he is Morrarsey negates his talent completely.

Yes, The Smiths.
Love 'em or hate 'em.
(Not sure at the moment.)

Re: Bands/Artists You've Grown Out of
Even though I am a bass player and Pastorius was a huge influence on me as a youngster I cannot for the life of me now listen to most of the material on his solo albums. I really can't listen to that kind of self indulgent, musical wankery anymore*. Mind you, his playing with Joni Mitchell is still sublime.
*This applies to any music I once listened to where melody takes a back seat to technique and 'chops'. Mind you, I dare say my sixteen-year old self would have been horrified at the prospect of developing a fondness for the work of Amiee Mann - I probably would have punched myself! Still, maybe one mellows with age.
