2020 what a bummer!
However, for new releases, albums from artist both established and new to my ears, it’s definitely been one of the best for many a year.
Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen 2020 albums were both excellent. I hope that there are lots of contributions as I discovered a few cracking albums from last year’s lists.
Putting together my faves I’m pleasantly surprised there were so many. There were some terrific albums in 2020.
Sarah Jarosz - World On The Ground
Nadia Reid - Out of My Province
Early James - Singing for My Supper
Honey Harper - Starmaker
Blake Mills - Mutable Set
Elizabeth Cook - Aftermath
Frazey Ford - U Kin B the Sun
Lucinda Williams - Good Souls Better Angels
Jonathan Wilson – Dixie Blur
Phoebe Bridges - Punisher
The Jayhawks - XOXO
Chuck Prophet - The Land That Time Forgot
Fleet Foxes - Shore
Laura Viers – My Echo
Margret Glaspy - Devotion
Waxhatchee – Saint Cloud
BC Camplight – Shortly after Takeoff
Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Smoke Fairies - Darkness Brings The Wonders Home
Porridge Radio – Every Bad

Fav track of the year Peter Broderick – Let It Go

I have worked my way through the Guardians to 50 albums (50-9) without too much joy. I will give Toontrevs list a go over the next few days , this is where Tidal is good - I have a love/hate relationship with Tidal.

The only two new releases I have bought this year that have I played a lot have been Baxter Dury's, Night Chancers & U.S. Girls, Heavy Light, maybe the others like Jessie Wares & Michael Kiwanuku will grow on me with more time but I think overall its been a mediocre year which given C19 is hardly a surprise.

I've heard a lot of good albums, not a lot of great albums come to mind though. For a lot of the year, I don't seem to have been in the mood for music at all. It's been over a week between listening sessions sometimes, I've always enjoyed silence though. and reading without distraction gives me as much pleasure as music, depending on my mood.

The only album I can actually remember getting vocal about was Dylan's Rough And Rowdy Ways, which is, in itself odd, as although I like Dylan, I don't consider myself a huge fan. It was (to me, anyway) even better than the new release from The Boss, and I am a huge Springsteen fan.

My choice has to be Rough And Rowdy Ways, as much for its simplicity as anything. It's an "honest" album if that means anything to anyone but me.

Apart from some obscure jazz I usually totally swerve new releases by ageing mainstream has beens who are long past their best . It is unusual to find any which have the attitude that first attracted me to them in their hey day . Best remembered in their prime.

I would take issue with this in many cases. Althogh usually not recapturing what they came up with in their youth many elder statesen are making quality albums in their autumn years, often after going through a dodgey spell following their initial rise to fame. I think an increasing awareness of their mortality and wanting to go out with sommething of quality is a factor. Bowie would never recapture what
he was in the 70s, but his later albums wiped the floor with everything he did in the 80s post Scary Monsters. Likewise the new AC/DC album might not be a Back i black, but it compares well with everything they have done since. The Who album of last year is their best since the 70s. I have my ticket to see them when things get back to normal.

In the first lock down I heard Elton John on the TV singing one of his old songs live, just him and piano in his garden. It was truly the most awful performance I have ever heard. I sat and winced through the whole thing.
