Look for the blue one.

And you will need a cable or adaptor that goes from RCA to 3.5mm stereo jack.

On a laptop it will be disguised as a microphone socket, go to the settings - system - sound screen (assuming it's a windows laptop) and you should see a box for the input device, which it should recognise once the phone stage is plugged in.

After that Audacity should do the rest.

Good point GT. All this makes me want to digitise the few LPs I don't have on CD.

Those Voyager albums have only ever been issued on CD in Japan and are prohibitively expensive online.

Halfway Hotel is available as a FLAC download from Qobuz

Just finished doing that as a lockdown project - may well post on some hidden, forgotten treasures at some point.

Mekons & Glaxo Babies etc.

Been trying to set a few things up so I could start digitising some vinyl.

Try as I might - just couldn't get my laptop to see any audio input from any connection I used. Gave up eventually and went out for the afternoon.

Coming back I thought I would try the Security permissions in Windows. Looking there I found that I had disabled the microphone from use by ALL applications. Turning this back on restored the PC's ability to recognise audio inputs.

So, Audacity is installed. The little USB audio input box is running. I have all the right cables - including a DIN-RCA link needed for the Tape output from the NVA preamp. See if I can get some LP's spinning tomorrow.

First on the list: Modern Eon 'Fiction Tales'. A great slice of early 80's South Yorkshire new wave.

Windows makes it a right faff, it's worth looking at properties part of the sound control panel and seeing if the soundcard supports 48 - 96/24 bit. Some do, some don't but the default is usually set to 44.1/16.

Just testing with an LP, looks like everything is working.

I think Audacity has some sort of automatic recording rate that means you can adjust the resulting export/output file to whatever format and quality you want.

In my case that will probably be CD standard of 44.1 KHz and 16 bit (or maybe 24).

Still messing around with Audacity but the recording quality so far seems to be just fine.

Are you sure that cartridge is tracking at the right angle?

Done the first LP rip into the system and the results are better than I had expected with a clean, dynamic sound and wonderful detail and imaging. Dead chuffed.

Problem is now that there are several old albums that I only have as low-res MP3's and those have either long disappeared or never been issued on CD; names like Dalek i, Pink Military, Wah! Heat, Music For Pleasure, Original Mirrors. Spent an hour yesterday evening on Discogs tracking down used LP copies and luckily found pretty well exerything I wanted, cheap(ish) and sourced from the Netherlands so I only have to pay local postage, Yippee!

Next up for digi-thingummyising: Delta 5 'See the Whirl'.
