Scratching the acoustic treatment itch

Every now and then I throw caution to the wind and buy something that I am not sure what I am going to with it, other than it will sate my curiosity. Having bought the said item, I then keep my fingers firmly crossed and hope I have not screwed up, so far I have done ok but I know my luck will eventually run out.

My latest purchase is these, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284274450411

To put this into context, my listing room is small and my ceiling is a little bit lower than a normal modern house but £100 for two sets was simply too good to ignore ( they cost circa £800 per set when new under two years ago) Once I have collected them I will try to figure out how best to utilise them, wish me luck

Good luck :epopc:

If I was going to be doing it I would be using something I had to hand  How about a few barley straw bales. Barley is way softer than wheat and oat straw is all gone :violin:

I've got plenty of bike inner tubes and tyres in the garage if you need to roll them up the road!

Reminds me of the "mushrooms" over the stage in the Albert Hall.

Unless you have a penny farthing your tyres are going to be a tad small for the 900mm large discs 🙂

That looks to me like a good purchase, and I for one will be interested how you get on. Could you tell me the dimensions of your room and whether you have your speakers facing the shorter or longer length of the room.

I don't wish to suggest that your approach won't work but do consider that the acoustic problem with the Royal Albert Hall is/was reverberation time. The idea of the mushrooms was to deaden the reverberation, I think they have been fairly successful.

You say your ceiling is lower than normal so I doubt reverberation time is the problem. However I have heard the effects of sound deadening materials and they can work really well but the best treatment I have heard was a set of heavy curtains. I shall be interested to read your comments on how you get on.

I'm with the heavy (lined) curtains...and a rug, and textured wallpaper. Keep the speaker end damped and the listening spot fairly 'live'.

Paul's report will be interesting, though, because it's not something I would have tried myself.
