Moody Blues SOLOS mix tape

Unread post by Mississippi Blind Child Assburn »

There are not many rock bands who can boast an uninterrupted run of SEVEN strong lps.

So then I find it curious that, when it came to solo efforts, the results were....saccharine, dismal, even unforgivable.

I just made myself a mix cdr of the few good tracks from these solo lps.

My question to you is:

what tracks would be your pick FROM THE SOLO LPS.

(I'm not including the fabulous "Bluebirds" lp since that was a collaboration between Lodge & Hayward.)

Solo lps, as I count them:

Mike Pinder had 2.
Ray Thomas 2.
Graeme Edge (as Graeme Edge Band)...2.
John Lodge 2 ( recently he has released, I believe, 2 surprizingly good cds. You can include those if you wish)
Justin Hayward at least 3 solo lps. (probably 3 more as cd)

So then, what tracks would be on your "Best of Moodies Solo lps" disc?

......
Oh man! I just read that Jon Hassell has passed away (at 84).

From his family:
"Jon is now free of a constricting body, he is liberated to be in his musical soul and will continue to play in the Fourth World"

I've recently got into moodies.

Question of balance is awesome , every song.

I've just bought on vinyl , every good boy deserves a favour , listened to side a only at moment ,I'm reserving judgement. Although I loVe that song 1 attempts to sum up the history of music and only as 4 words.

These albums came 1 after the other, were are they in your 7 on the bounce.

Barclay James Harvest were, of course, talked about as the "poor man's Moody Blues". I'm pretty sure on some later BJH lp they themselves name the track title so.

...............

Yeah - I just checked it. It's a take on "Nights in White Satin" with the lyrics diddled around with.

Has it really been two years?

Anyways....where BJH really shine is on the live lps - especially the first double. Unlike the Moodies, BJH would veer a bit away from the studio tracks with guitar solos, etc.

I always thought Moodies were not THAT accomplished musicians because they never go off on an tangent, live - and show some chops. But then.....then out of the blue, as if to prove me wrong, Justin Hayward comes up with that monster guitar solo at the Red Rocks Colorado concert on the track, "I'm Only A R&R Star".

The Moodies salience can be measured by how many groups ( before BJH) they directly influenced: Cressida,Gracious,Spring,Cirkus,Fantasy,Kestrel.

King Crimson "Court of Crimson King" is nigh undisputably declared the first prog lp, repositioning rock. Yet listen to something like "Epitaph" from that cornerstone King Crimbo lp and tell me they were not influenced by "Days Of Future Passed".

Is this a question?

I'm not sure what you're asking here. Do you want my personal rating of those 7 lps?

You said they made 7 good albums 1 after the other.
Apologies for omitting punctuation

Here is my proposed "best of the solos" tracklist (in the order I would want it):

ray thomas - from mighty oaks
justin hayward - tightrope
graeme edge band - tunnel
john lodge - in my mind
hayward - Nostradamus
thomas - I wish we could fly
thomas- migration
hayward - doin' time
thomas - carousel

That's it. (Hard-pressed to find anymore worthy tracks than this.)

Notice I picked NOTHING from the two Mike Pinder lps....which were particularly obnoxious.
