I am on a bit of a nostalgia trip. I followed the charts from 1969 until the mid 70s and am compiling Qobuz play lists. Songs I might not have liked back then have a certain attraction now. What made the charts fifty years ago, no matter how cheesey, had a tune and is in a different league to the rap and hip hop shite of today.

Cant remember how it came to be but somehow I recenly got directed to Paul Young on The Tube - link below. I missed it first time round -there is just something about those 80's backing singers - Guilty (not exclusively musical) pleasures

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkJW1bINoW0

Also Robbie Williams ( sorry )
Paul Young, with the great Pino Palladino on bass. Apparently, he used to pay his backing singers so little they could never afford to buy bras.

And Robbie's got a great voice.

Barry White. The man was a genius. Those string arrangements are simply sublime.

Gene Page: The Best of the Motown Arranger Extraordinaire

Gene Page’s name quietly graces the credits of dozens of classic soul records. The prolific Los Angeles-born orchestrator and arranger worked with some of pop music’s biggest names – Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and Lionel Ritchie among them – but the twin long-term roles which secure his place in the pantheon of soul music are as arranger for both Barry White and Motown, where he worked in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mum got me into Glenn Millar back in the late 50's when I was a toddler, swing music has been a part of my life ever since. She was also largely responsible for my enjoyment of Nat King Cole and Sam Cook who is an undoubted legend.

Many years ago there used to be a late(ish) night big-band show on telly, and I used to watch it with my late father. I also saw James Last (Dad conned me) live, and it turned out to be one of the best gigs I ever attended.
