Munich Hi End show

Unread post by NSNO2021 »

I have watched various YouTube clips over the past few days. To me way of thinking there was an abundance of totally over the top "willy waving" kit with associated price tags. The size and weight of some of turntables is bonkers. I can only assume that there must be people buying this bling.

The only company who I have seen so far that is being creative, whilst delivering product at prices that people could aspire to was Mo-Fi.

If you want to dip in and out of the this madness have a look at the links below.

Tomasz was at the show, helping out on the HifiMan (headphones) stand. They were using an NVA AP10H headphone amplifier with a couple of sets of planar cans (hard to drive, so the AP10H is perfect, originally being a speaker amp). A few distributors / dealers asked about our amp...'not nearly expensive enough. Would have to be at least 6 times that for us to be bothered. Sounds great, though'.

That is the world we live in, lol.

Maybe its an age thing, but as I get older more and more of the world we live in leaves me shaking my head, sometimes in frustration, sometimes in confusion and very occasionally in either anger or despair

I watched bits of the video, some of it was interesting and some of it made me wonder whether I was odd in thinking why? A turntable system that weighs in at 600Kg, pardon? Thorens new tone arm uses a knife edge bearing, so does my 1970s SME. Do any of these super expensive devices sound better than what I already have? Probably but not, I suggest, several orders of magnitude better.

The LP centring gizmo thats featured in YouTube video with the separate link underneath to the MCRU site is £5,000 !

Just think of the useful stuff you could buy or the good you could with a £5,000 donation - yet another head shaking moment

And this is where the AP10H-SE (Special Edition) comes in.

#1 - Only sold via shows, unless it generates significant interest.
#2 - Covered with Rhinestones, and tinsel. Gold plastic knob. Gold jack socket (Switchcraft do a nice one).
#3 - A zero added to the end of the price in £s, €s, $s, whatever.
#4 - A lump of stone sourced from Stainton Quarry (nr. Barnard Castle) glued inside, to give it "heft". Could also be a selling point? Possible tie-in with Specsavers?
#5 - May need to be rebadged. How about CDA?
#6 - As well as the "bling" version with the Rhinestones perhaps you could offer a bespoke stone-clad version too?
#7 - It's impossible for me to keep a straight face any longer.

Vertere Acoustics, you know them as the designer that created the Roksan tt, now have a tonearm costing £43k, don't let Fretless know or he'll be after one. There must be plenty of folk with more cash than brains out there these days looking at hifi prices.

Nice to know I'm in the 'more cash than brains' category.

I am really struggling to understand how a tone arm can cost £43k! OK there is R&D to consider but materials are labour can’t account for more than a fraction of that. Are they trying to recover the development costs in the first few months or does the price reflect their sales expectations of few deliveries? The whole “high end” thing looks like conspicuous consumption rather than cutting edge technology though I suspect some advanced technology is lurking in there somewhere.
