I love this atmospheric cover which is so appropriate for the doom laden music contained in what I consider is the first album which can be labeled heavy metal. It laid the foundation for what would follow. The model is Louisa Livingstone who was in her teens at the time. Her short 5ft stature makes the background more imposing. It was freezing cold and apparently she is not wearing anything underneath what we see. The initial intention was to make the cover raunchy, but this would have detracted from the mood of the album.

I am always reminded of this cover when I go for a local walk and pass a building which looks remarkably similar.

The light was fading when I went for my walk yesterday after the rain and the building looked really eerie.

It's been a bit quiet on this thread lately, so here's something for today: Houses of the Holy.

Image

Houses of the Holy was the fifth studio album by Led Zep. Released on Atlantic 28th March 1973.

The cover was the first for the band to be designed by Hipgnosis and was a montage of photographs taken of a couple of children at Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.

The colouring effects which create the other-worldliness are largely accidental.
The choice of subject matter led to the album being banned in certain places.

It's also a damn fine piece of work musically.

Have a great day.
