I made the mistake of archiving most of my CDs into plastic wallets and have since spent a fortune replacing the jewel cases.

For me, original CDs with decent dynamic range have been where the best value is at for those of us who want to own physical format (which, I do). The mastering trumps the format, imo.

Summer sales are on and I'm having a vinyl splurge. Mostly 80's pop and older jazz LP's.

Schizo - I have phases where I only get CD's (up to 3 months ago) now in a 12", needle-driven frenzy.

When I bought my first CD player in the mid 80s I spent a small fortune on discs which were costing three times as much as the equivalent vinyl, the reverse of today. I believed vinyl would soon have its day. No regrets as CDs from that era have decent dynamic range and they have never sounded better. I am buying CD mastered from decades past on the second hand market often for peanuts. In mos5 cases they sound so much better than modern compressed remasters.

I think that the extortionate prices of CDs in the early days was a British phenomenon. In the early 90s I went for holidays in Canada where they were a lot cheaper. I brought a lot back.

The article says CD has a greater dynamiC range. Of course this should be the case but wi5h most modern popular recordings it is not because of the loudness wars. I think this has a lot to do with the popularity of vinyl amongst audiophiles. This issue does not arise with classical music. I have streamed some on Qobuz and the dynamic contrast compared to most popular masters is night and day. I don't think vinyl can compete with this type of music.

No mention of Music Magpie and World of Books, but they can be found via eBay. Have picked up lots of b bargains with decent DR from decades past.

I get most of my used CDs from Medimops in Germany (via eBay).

Low prices, huge assortment - great for Krautrock!

A good Dutch webshop is Variaworld.

Medimops seems to be Momox in the UK. I buy from this site through eBay.
