They don't make 'em like they used to ...
Looks like it is a psychological fact that you will dislike pop music made after you hit 35.
Yup - that is about right for me.

I would say 30 in my case. I consider the 90s to be a musical desert in comparison to the 60s, 70s and 80s. Nothing has blown me away since. In the 90s I bought less CDs and attended fewer concerts. Things picked up from the turn of the century, but what I like is heavily influenced by the golden decades of my childhood and youth which have withstood the test of time.

A point that needs making is that CDs became mass market in the 90s and and could be played on ghetto blasters. Prior to this you needed a dedicated CD player as part of a hifi system. This had a detrimental impact on production and mastering, from the audiophile stand point. I am sure this was a contributory factor towards me losing interest in music to some extent in the 90s. That said,I did buy a CD playing radio cassette player.

Re: They don't make 'em like they used to ...
I was 35 in 1989. There is a ton of music I enjoy after that was turned out after that date, as well as prior to it. Go back to your "favourite year and look at the singles charts for that year and amaze yourself at the amount of utter fekkin rubbish that was actually popular. It's all rose-tinted glasses territory.
I was staying at a hotel in Brighton once, and the owner liked a bevvy with his like-minded guests. It turned out he was an ex-Pirate DJ from the days of Caroline, London, etc. and one extremely late night ensued when he brought out a set of cassettes which contained "The Last Days Of Radio Caroline". This was my era, and full of happy memories of the days when one snuggled up under the covers of a night with one's transistor radio. I had such great memories of that era, but, well, there were loads of good tunes, yes, but by God, there was some cobblers too. For every Crispian St Peters, there was an Englething Dumpertruck, and for every Billy J Kramer there was a Ned Miller or a Max Bygraves. Like I said rose-tinted glasses, or perhaps a rose-tinted filter would be more accurate. Rolf Harris, Kenny Lynch, Mel Torme, I could go on; they certainly did. We just found the diamonds in the dirt, and that's what we tend to remember.

I’m 55 and still crazy about music.
Big Radio 6 fan.
I’ve seen a ton of great bands in tbe last few years.
Theee Ohsees
Weyes Bloody
Lovely Eggs
Bug Club
Pale Blue Eyea
Dana Gavanski
Jessica Hoop
Idles
Nadine Shah
Fiona Apple
And loads more.
Music is as good today as it’s always been. And like any time in my lifetime, plenty of commercial crap about too.
Doesn’t hurt to be a bit discerning.

Re: They don't make 'em like they used to ...
I could draw a graph of average DR rating per year and my average rating of the music.
There would be a correlation.
the graph would also be a similar shape to the one above.
Or a graph of proportion of hits made by people that rose to stardom via a TV talent show vs my average rating of them.
Or some other graph that indicated how "corporate" the music was on average vs how highly I rated it.

No getting away from it. Things have gone down hill and it is not just a matter of age and quality of the music. I prefer the albums of favourite bands from the 70s and 80s to what they are releasing now because of better mastering and less compression.Lindsayt wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2024 2:56 am I could draw a graph of average DR rating per year and my average rating of the music.

Norman Mailer stated that they old find everything is going down hill because it is easier to die . I have this in mind when I start to critique the modern world .

He was wrong! One only becomes old when one finds that everything is going down hill.Daniel Quinn wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 7:11 pm Norman Mailer stated that they old find everything is going down hill because it is easier to die . I have this in mind when I start to critique the modern world .
