Too much compression suppressing dynamic range. It started in the 1990s when CD was not limited to hifi systems and became the norm where mainstream new releases and remasters are concerned. It has benefits if listening in a noisy environment and through smart speakers and cheap ear buds (the mass market) but seriously degrades the listening experience on a hifi system.

I see, thank you. Didn't know it was referred to as Loudness Wars, but does explain why Oasis CD's sound so poor as to be unlistenable, and why I love my Telarc CD's so much.

Oasis CDs are the worst I have experienced. Unmistakable on a hifi system. Noel Galagher want them to be as loud as possible.

In fairness, the even bigger problem is that they have Oasis on them.

Received a copy of Bon Jovi's Keep the faith today. A sealed 2016 reissue of the 1992 release. As near mint copies of the 1992 release are going for well on excess of £100, getting a sealed copy of the reissue for £30 Inc postage could be considered a win. IF the pressing is acceptable. The 92 vinyl release had scores of 11,11,12 on the DR site, and the 2016 was 10, 10, 11, so that side of things is ok ... Certainly louder than my original pressing of keep the faith etc.

I'm happy to report that the vinyl plays brilliantly with no pressing issues 😆 I'm not sure I want to venture much further along the collection in vinyl for fear of falling victim to poor quality pressings though
