Re: HS2 opinions
I feel deep sympathy for the former residents of the estate in Mexborough South Yorks.

They have truly been fucked over and the emotional cost to these people would have been bad enough but they went through it for nothing. And all the Tory cunts in Westminster can think about is jeering and waving papers about. Utter cunts.

I take a great interest in all matters railway, and for me, one of the big benefits of HS2 was making many more freight paths available on the existing lines.
It seems most people, when asked, would like rail freight to increase and lorry movements to decrease.
A couple of months ago I spent a few hours at Nuneaton railway station (on the west coast mainline) and was amazed at the number of freight trains passing through. Freight from Southampton and Felixstowe container ports ( going north) would pass through as well as all the stone trains and many other assorted cargos.
It's BIG business, and getting bigger.

Re: HS2 opinions
I agree. HS2 was not just about speed, it was also about overall capacity. Failing to complete HS2 will mean more wagons on our roads.valvesRus wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:19 pm I take a great interest in all matters railway, and for me, one of the big benefits of HS2 was making many more freight paths available on the existing lines.

Re: HS2 opinions
The way mexborough residents have been treated in all this has been disgraceful. practically no consultation, and what little there was fell on Deaf ears. I would have been able to see the bloody great eyesore of a viaduct from my garden, and one of my mothers friends was one of those who had to sell up to hs2 from the shimmer estate.
The way those on the estate were treated was beyond the pale.
It was a none starter from the outset, westminster never gave a shit and would not even pay the market value of the homes they wanted demolished. They could have moved the route about 200 metres to the other side of the river don and the canal that runs past the estate and completely missed the estate. There are fields for about 3 miles from that side estate to the next bit of habitation.
Rediculous

Re: HS2 opinions
The bit that is really needed has been scrapped, the bit that is just window dressing stays, sounds like a political decision. Meanwhile we have had new length of road that replaces a section that could be a mirror image of itself. Realignment of the railway bridge further up the hill would have made more sense. From what I can see HS2 is paying for infrastructure improvements along the route that might otherwise not have happened but still making an absolute mess of the countryside through which it may, eventually, pass.

Re: HS2 opinions
I have read many things on the STOPHS2 website, one thing they mention is that engineers did not properly survey and many problems have arisen that were not costed in. One of those is the extensive mining subsistence that has occurred in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. That could be one reason why the Eastern leg has been scrapped.
But Geoff is probably right in that it is political. Many people have said that if they were serious about "levelling up" then construction should have started in Yorkshire. Frankly I couldn't give a toss as I have got the outcome I wanted. Shame about the poor sods who live on the western leg. You may notice that I focus on the emotional aspects of this as to me it is all that matters. I really don't care about any money I would have lost.
Talking of money, there must have been quite an amount of money wasted on the Eastern leg. My land is unregistered as it is not law to register it if you inherit it. It took hs2 Ltd ages to track me down and when they did I ignored the letters until more than a year later somebody turned up at my door I like to think I wasted a bit of their budget, oh yeah that thought makes me feel good.
Eventually I got paid £1000 for some surveys they wanted to do that to my knowledge never happened. Well they're not getting that money back I'm going to spend it on enjoying myself and maybe a donation to The Good Law Project who do some marvellous work.

Nothing wrong with being a NIMBY. There is a proposal to build a mosque near us and my wife and I have submitted objections to the council.karatestu wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 8:52 pm I have read many things on the STOPHS2 website, one thing they mention is that engineers did not properly survey and many problems have arisen that were not costed in. Are they planning to build a model railway in the grounds?CN211276 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 9:42 pmNothing wrong with being a NIMBY.
