Brexit

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

Time for new thread as reality has changed.

I predict no Brexit. The reason = N.Ireland.

Best solution give NI back to SI, or effectively so by leaving it in the EU = civil war

Second best solution for us, have a frontier and customs posts = civil war

Stoopidly expensive solution that will cost 10 times more than predicted and then wont work properly like all Gov IT projects. A computer controlled border = maybe civil war as it wont work.

Our Gov has the choice between a rock and a hard place, so I predict a new Brexit vote which will go for staying in the EU when the *real* alternatives are shown.

Result our credibility is largely shot in Brussels who will see it as victory and push us further and further into USofE.

BUT Brexit wont go away, it will be delayed until we sort out the damn stooopidity of the Ireland question which has plagued us for over 100 years.

My long term solution. Give NI to a newly independent Scotland, as all the prots there originated in Scotland, so they can have the problem.

Could be that Europe says 'Stuff the UK, they wanted out. They are out'. And a hard Brexit comes from the EU.

Mainly to scare off the likes of Italy who might be tempted to try something of a similar level of ridiculousness.

Then they will be responsible for a civil war in Ireland so they can send troops and sort it out. Lets see if Brussels will enjoy bombs from either the IRA or the UDF https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles

I quite like the idea, but for Ireland and their people a complete disaster that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

It is Brussels and the concept of USofE that is ridiculous, it wont be only Italy. The EU in reality is France, Germany, and Benelux, everyone else is hangers on, who will fall off one by one, apart from Ireland who will be bribed to stay in (as now) just to piss us off.

If Ireland wasn't being bribed then it would have joined in with Brexit and joined a customs union with the UK, and in the future all the ex Empire countries especially the Dominions and the USA.

There will be violence if Brexit is blocked. End of democracy. Irish border is a red herring. Will people start fighting just because they have cameras on the border? Oh they already have them in fact. It's impossible to have a closed border because of physical and logistical reasons. I think we will leave and stay in the customs union for at least the foreseeable future. Remaining in single market is of course totally unacceptable due to migration and other rules and totally against what the majority voted for. Likely a majority in parliament for staying in customs union only. Both of the government plans could be made to work but parliament are undermining governments negotiating position. In fact if we were strong and threatened to walk away the fear of economic damage to the EU would prompt the Germans and French to put pressure on the bureaucrats to compromise. Unfortunately we have a bunch of Mps and appointed stooges in the Lords who have no respect for a democratic vote. Answer one bill to abolish house of lords or PM appoint 100 Tory brexit supporting Peers. BTW the BBC aren't helping by publicly rubbishing the govt continually. Theresa May has surprised people before and may yet do again. I think she is the only half capable politician who can run the country in this situation. The alternatives are pretty frightening at present. If they could get the boundaries changed as proposed and stop students voting in University towns but in their home constituencies Tories might have a chance of an increased majority. Ask the residents of Canterbury and Bristol North West.

The old argument that events have shown to be wrong and unworkable - you need to think again. There will be no civil conflict of any consequences here, just per usual a few eeediots. Both the left and the right have their eeediots that don't need much excuse, luckily they are both in severe minority even accounting for the Corbyn effect.

Give them a bare hillside somewhere in the Pennines and let them fight it out between them, hopefully exterminating each other.

"End of democracy" you obviously have very little understanding and knowledge of British history. Democracy has always been partial in both senses of the word.
