Didn't they strengthen the walls above the Calder in Hebden Bridge after the last flooding?

Glad I live up a hill at times like this. Went for a walk this afternoon when the rain eased but got caught in it on the way back. The River Rhymmney must have risen ten foot since I last saw it two days ago. Have never seen it this high. It has burst its banks and is flooding fields. They are building houses near by and if it gets much higher the site will flood.

Living in Holland, river defenses are a way of life here.
Just behind my house is the river Waal, part of the lower section of the Rhine. We get hit every spring by meltwater from the Alps and if that combines with heavy rainfall then it can be quite dramatic.

The dykes are due to be raised and strengthened during the next 2 or 3 years, due to rising sea levels.

I remember the Calder valley well from my teenage years in Todmorden. Luckily we lived up on the moors.

Yes 4 years of continual roadworks lifting the river containment walls, rebuilding bridges etc Millions apon Millions of £'s spent but last time I looked a couple of hours ago, it looks like its about to overtop some of the barriers, but the works to the Calder have been confined to Mytholmroyd, it was overtopping at Callis Mill and in Walsden last time I looked.

I forgot you lived up here! You were probabaly quite close to us?

I imagine the Calder in full Flood looks like a stream compared to your River

Here is an old photo of the river covering the flood plain a couple of miles upstream. Can get a lot higher.

Yes makes the Calder look like an angry stream.

Flower Scar Road is the opposite side of the valley we are in Blackshaw Head

Damn, it's cold.

Temperature is -4 and dropping and there is a strong wind sweeping down from Siberia. With wind-chill we could be down to -15 tonight.

First time we've had proper snow in about 10 years too.

Brrrr.

Gonna be cold here too by tomorrow. It snowed here last night but all gone this morning. Had more snow this year than the last ten I think. Kids love it

We've still got snow on the ground down here in my bit of Kent, but it's sleeting now.
