And there I was, all ready for season 4 of Star Trek Discovery which was due to start on Netflix - only to find out that Paramount have withdrawn the series and will be putting it out on their own streaming service NEXT YEAR !!!!!!

s4 e1 of Star Trek: Discovery didn't so much start off with a bang tonight, but there were several quite big bangs before the end. The title of the episode was Kobayashi Maru, which was like meeting an old friend after a long time. There was another nod to an earlier series too when the Federation President pointed out the brand spanking new "Archer Space Dock." No more spoilers. I promise. ;)

I watched the first episode of "Wheel of Time," last night, and it's pretty epic. They've chucked a lot of money at this and you can see that immediately. It's supposed to be Amazon's answer to Game of Thrones, but expect visual comparisons with Lord Of The Rings, although the bulk of the series was shot in Prague, in the Czech Republic, not New Zealand. Filming also took place in Slovenia and Dubrovnik, Croatia so the interweb tells me. Don't be put off by the apparent "slow" start to the story in e1, it really hots up towards the last third of the episode.

There are currently 3 episodes available, with the next 5 dropping weekly, from November 26th, until December 24th. I'm guessing the idea is #1 - to get viewers hooked immediately, and #2 - to draw all of the disparate threads together quickly for those of - How shall I put this? - of a "limited" attention span.

Best of all, it's free to Amazon Prime subscribers.

Series 2 is already confirmed.

Why is it with these fantasy films and TV series that you can almost always date when they were made by the hairstyles of the cast?

Why do the people that make them have so little imagination when it comes to hairstyles and facial hair?

As well as them maintaining a perfectly shampooed and groomed look after the character has spent days riding through the wilderness.

It has always been thus. You can usually date a Western by the width of the lapels, and don't forget Steve McQueen's chinos in The Great Escape!

If you haven't spotted this already you can stream this 'live' on Friday nights on Pluto (the place where TV shows go to die) . Alternatively it's £2.49 a pop on Amazon.

Not ideal but better than nothing. That said I'm almost tempted to wait until the DVD set turns up in charity shops....

Right, I've given this programme a good chance now (five episodes) and I won't be carrying on with it. It's just too fantastical for my liking and I never would have thought I could say that being Tolkien's biggest fan.
