There are better Dutch beers. Amstel is alright but Heineken is dreadful stuff - wouldn't be drinking that if it was the last beer left on the planet.

When I first came to The Netherlands I tried just about every beer I could find and settled on Dutch brewery Hertog Jan as the best. Their Pilsener is excellent and the beer that I always have here for myself and my guests/clients.

A lovely refreshing pilsener with a full body and satisfying taste.
Don't know if it is easily available in the UK.

Furthermore, with Belgium only a hour's drive away, there are truly superb Belgian beers, such as Duvel, and Trappist ales like Chimay and Affligem (their Tripel is a personal favourite). :guiness;
