Clap For Heroes?

Unread post by savvypaul »

It seems that patronising, token gestures are back in town. 'Clap For Heroes' kicks off (again) this Thursday. How about we just fund public services properly, pay public service workers properly, make sure they have the PPE they need and listen to them when it comes to making decisions?

Sentimentality won't improve our public services.

I'm not privileged to know anyone still working in the NHS, but an ex-nurse told me she finds it insulting, in light of the government's "I'm all right, Jack," attitude, especially as far as pay rises, or the lack thereof.

A one-off show of appreciation would probably have been acceptable and accepted. This regimented applause smacks of "here's your bonus, get over it, and get back to work." to me.

At the risk of flippancy, surely giving heroes the clap costs lives.

I think it's a patronising and hypocritical gesture, if you feel strongly enough then vote for a party that will protect and respect the NHs and it's employees. Not one that trades in insincere sound bites and vague but never fulfilled promises.

My daughter has worked in the NHs for many years now as a nurse an ocupation we never saw comming. She has had very little, if any in the way of a pay rise. she appreciates (im sure) the principle not just for her but all those she works with. However Im sure all of them would prefer to be recognised for the work they do and be paid accordingly.

I would rather we didn’t clap, but instead suggest the government show them appreciation by paying them fairly.

Teachers and nurses have had their salaries reduced in real terms over many years.

They don’t need out adoration, and decent wage should be fine.

One of my sons has a first class honours medical degree, and works as a physiotherapist for the NHS. Another failed his A-levels, and has ended up in marketing, the one in marketing earns much more than the other.

I’d rather he was properly rewarded, not applauded.
