7 was my favourite, or least bad. I hate 10, does my head in.

Since W95, every time there was a new system I preferred the previous one, for a while.

Now I've got used to W10 I certainly would not like to go back. Security these days on old operating systems would be abysmal.

These days a Chromebook (or at least the Chrome operating system) would do me for 90% of my needs, as might Ubuntu or one of the other Linux systems.

I found Windows 8 to be an abomination and have a nagging suspicion that 11 will be the same.

The real world security risks for Windows 7 when compared to Windows 10, for users that aren't idiots - seem to be - as far as I can tell - a load of marketing bollocks aimed at getting gullible people to move over to Windows 10... or 11... or whatever the latest Microsoft agenda is.

Microsoft used to have a pattern of every other operating system from them being a bad one. With 8 and 10 they broke that pattern. They're both bad.

And yes Linux is more secure than anything that a marketing (more than engineering) company like Microsoft are capable of.

The biggest security risk - for most people - appears to be Indian refund and tech support scammers. The ones that you phone you up from different numbers every 48 hours or so :angry-screaming:

I have had a lot of this masquarading as Sky technical support. The first time I nearly fell for it as I was having internet problems. After that I would tell them to f*** themselves. Now I put the phone down and let them talk to themse!ves.

I get them also quite regularly - best time was when I kept one on the line by asking him which computer actually had the problem: what IP address or model - he was from Microsoft so he must know.

After 5 minutes of that the Indian gentleman on the other end accused me of wasting his time and rang off!

Aside from playing with a Windows 8 device I avoided that OS. I used corporate W7 machines without any problems but the last Windows computer I owned has Vista. This was the machine that caused me to buy my first Mac, several times it told me, the only user, that I didn't have authority to move files. Windows is now strictly restricted to car manuals. I have these on an XP machine and a tablet running W10, if I can't put W11 on the tablet it is no loss I don't need internet access on it.

I read something on the internet yesterday from someone who gives scammers false credit card details.

An operating system is just another tool, and if you use tools you learn HOW to use them.

With a little user input, W10 is not half as bad as people moan that it is. Also, remember, we, as a group asr reasonably tech-savvy, unlike some silver surfers, or "Mister Average," the ubiquitous "man on the Clapham omnibus."

I moaned about the intrusive nature of W10 and the incessant hand-holding when I first upgraded, but after a while, I found simple ways to circumvent most things that were bugging, because
a) I was "clever" enough to do that myself, or...
b). I know how to use Google. Whatever you want to do there's a high probability that somebody has already done it and is bragging about it somewhere.

I also came to realise that a large portion of my moaning was about things I'd read about that were "wrong" with W10 and not things I'd actually experienced personally.

Bottom line, Micro$oft went for the lowest common denominator as far as users go, and that's fairly low. There are people out there (e.g. people who still happily click links in emails from people they don't know - that level of user) who do actually benefit from the hand holding. They need to leave the training wheels on.

Speaking as someone who, as part of one job I had, had to write a user manual for the tills on a brand new EPOS system - starting from a blank sheet - one really does have to go "back to basics" and cannot make any assumptions about the skills of end-users, as my subsequent rewrites and appendices proved..

Put a bit of effort in and W10 improves. It's also a lot more fun and a lot more productive, streamlining it, rather than doing nothing except moan about stuff that is easily fixable. Think of it as "personalising" your OS.

As I've said, I don't particularly like Micro$oft, but I have to work with their software so I eventually took the time to make W10 work for me, rather than the other way around. I'm not expecting W11 to be any different in that respect.

One great thing about Windows 11 is that it has bought the cost of used laptops right down. Along with coming out of Covid.

I've just bought a Dell Latitude 7470 for my son to see him through uni for £126. A year ago they were £300.

This laptop won't run Windows 11. But we don't care.
