Sprouts

Unread post by karatestu »

50 million sprouts will be sold this Xmas. I quite like a sprout at this time of year. My kids hate them. They won't entertain them. I have even tried to persuade them by saying "they are only baby cabbages" but even that doesn't work.

Happy Christmas flatulence.

Possible methods to try:

Disguise them with other food. Sprout and turnip mash or sprout laced grilled polenta. Or sprouts in some sort of salad. Or in a mixed stir fry.

Get the children involved in preparing / cooking them.

Different cooking method. EG blanched and fried instead of boiled. Or roasted instead of boiled. From my youth, sprouts were always served to me boiled. Usually over-boiled. With hindsight this was a waste of a good mini-cabbage.

Have a Christmas dinner game of Truth or Dares. With their dares being to eat deliciously prepared sprouts.

Present them with a Christmas dinner with them being told they can eat or leave as much of it as they want.
If sprouts are the only things they don't eat, then they are relatively unfaddy children.

Oven-baked: roll the sprouts first in a little olive oil, then sprinkle a pinch of salt, bake in an oven dish for a half-hour or so, then serve with some melted blue cheese (gorgonzola is great) and crushed walnuts.

Sprouts actually contain more vitamin C than oranges, and they're rich in lots of other good stuff too.
There is a genetic predisposition in some people to taste excessive bitterness, thankfully not me. I bloody love 'em!

+1

I often sprinkle a little vinegar on mine too, but then again, I love vinegar as much as I love sprouts, so win-win.

Our practice has been to have roast beef for Christmas but Mrs Mick saw a turkey at 75% off yesterday and bought it. God knows what we'll do with it but she's a glutton for a bargain! Still love sprouts fried up with bacon no matter what the protein.
