I remember the days of slumming it with a couple of Palm's hung on the wall. Maybe the answer is electronic kick drum and toms which would only require one channel. Electronic snare drums and cymbals are just not good enough yet so that would have to stay traditional.

No it wouldn’t, having kick and toms on one channel restricts the ability to change the mix, the drummer isn’t in the best position to do that. Drummers are put in a box for a reason!
