Are you being tight with the heating ?
I have been since April. Boiler switched off at the mains until recently. Even now we are only using it for hot water. The log burner is doing overtime due to the large amount of logs i have stashed away from work.
I get up at 5.30m usually and first thing I do after putting the kettle on is get the stove going. It's usually quite snug by the time the rest of the family get up an hour later.

Thus far - not so much but then we were lucky with the deal we signed up with prior to the real nastiness kicking off. At the time I thought it was expensive, but in hindsight.
Though rather than turn the heating up when (or if in these odd times) it does get cold I will use the log burners to keep the house toasty. It's not so easy though when your wife has cold blood....

Re: Are you being tight with the heating ?
We are also lucky to have a very effective log-stove in the living-room, more than enough to keep us warm in the evenings. During the day I have lowered the thermostat to run at 18C instead of the usual 19C.
But - work requires that our heating system runs to keep our guest-accommodation at temperature when we have a training-group in. The central heating runs on sacks of wood-pellets that have trebled in price over the last year. I have tweaked the settings a bit to get that system runnng more economically, but when the outside temperature drops to freezing point it takes a good 50kg of pellets per day to keep the barn at 20C. Luckily it is mainly underfloor which is highly cost-effective.
Also, shifting 15kg sack of pellets isn't too easy when you are recovering from a dislocated shoulder.
From next April, I have arranged a new energy-supplier with a fixed-rate especially for small businesses. It will be considerably cheaper than the variable-rate that I am currently paying - to what has ended-up being one of the most expensive suppliers in the country!

Re: Are you being tight with the heating ?
I've got the thermostat set at 18o and if the worst comes to the worst I've got some lovely warm nightshirt, and one of those "Sherpa" blanket thingies. No, not the one with the sleeves and "legs".
Re the nightshirt - that usually gets a laugh but I thought I'd give them a try after sixty-Gawd-knows-how-many years of wearing pyjama tops, bottoms or both. I couldn't believe how warm and comfy they are. I bought another three. If/When it gets really cold I've got some thin trackie bottoms to keep the rest of me warm, as I hate having anything more than a sheet over me in bed.
TMI?
Sorry.

Re: Are you being tight with the heating ?
It depends on the weather. The back of the house is south facing and if the sun is out we do not need any heating for much of the day. The down stairs is open plan and the low sun at this time of the year penetrates everywhere. Until recently with the short days we have hardly had the heating on since February.

Cup of tea at work. Filling my flasks at the same time. It's surprisingly quick at boiling.

The log stove in the sitting-room. The concrete surround takes a while to warm through but then stays hot for hours after the fire ihas gone out.

I live in a semi and the stove is on the party wall. I'm thinking about sending a bill to my next door neighbour for heating their house as well

All this boiling of water on camp fires just makes me think of old cowboy movies. Saddle up, time to move on out.
