No place in the sun...

Unread post by savvypaul »

Spain is planning to impose a tax of up to 100% on the value of properties bought by non-residents from countries outside the EU, such as the UK.

Announcing the move, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the "unprecedented" measure was necessary to meet the country's housing emergency.

Should the UK do the same?

True, lol.

We still have lots of tourism, though.

I went to a wedding in Cullen Bay (near Inverness) the year before last. It was mid Spring but not Easter so the season hadn't properly kicked off. Most of the lovely old fisherman's cottages were sat empty, as they had been since late October.

I have found that the prices of holiday accommodation in the Uk have rocketed since Brexit and Covid. Did not go for a holiday in the UK last year because of this, together with no guarantees about the weather. Had to stay in London twice for AC/DC and a wedding and inferior hotels cost a lot more than what we paid in 2023 on a previous visit. Going abroad has become far more attractive. Off to Tenerife next month, the nearest place for some needed warm sun at this time of the year when you can sit out and have a drink.
