Yet another type of pedal for you to consider. There are plenty out there and they're not too expensive.

Re: The Guitar and Other Machines
I'm hooked on the Chords of Orion films at the moment - the guy is doing what I want to do and telling me how to do it!
Budget is limited (luckily, or the house would already be bursting with guitar effects) and so ..... here we have cheapo Volume Pedal nr 2 to try:

YES !!!! Complete silence when the pedal is down and NO irritating loud hum. Nice smooth action (the Daphon could squeak a bit). Lovely swelling atmospheric chords!
This second pedal is the Quik Lok VP26-11. Made in Italy and under €30. Weight is about the same as the Daphon (rather light) but the QuikLok feels more solid and better made, it doesn't have the minimum volume knob of the Daphon but that was bl##dy useless anyway!
This does exactly what I need for now.
Happy Bunny.

Re: The Guitar and Other Machines
Help!
I think I need a pedalboard now.

Nine (count em) pedals!
I was watching another of Bill Vencil's tutorials about how to set up an ambient effects chain and he put in a chorus pedal to get that 'shimmering' Cocteau Twins sound, and I thought 'I want that as well!'.
Then I thought: 'Hang on, I HAVE a Chorus Pedal!'. It is a Boss Bass Chorus but maybe it'll work here. Dug it out of the box I chucked it into a week or two ago and put it in the approved Chords of Orion position in the pedal layout.
Another trick I am quickly learning is how to dial in effects. Previously, I messed around until I found a sound I liked and just left it there. Learning how the effects boxes influence Tone, it is now easier to adjust them to achieve the sound that you want. I now have that old Chorus pedal creating a glorious shimmer that I never realised it could do.
Four of these are pedals that I've had for ages/decades, the other five newly purchased and all in the €25-€30 range. So I think I've done well with my starter set.
From the right:
Compressor
Fuzz/distortion
Phaser
Volume
Chorus
Reverb
Delay
Tape Echo
Looper
Reverb is actually plugged in after the DL4 delay.
One of the functions of the Tape Echo provides a 1.5 second infinite loop that I use for background drones or a basic rhythmic pulse. It was the first effects pedal I bought and it's still invaluable.
Hmmm ..... I wonder, don't Quik Lok made pedalboards as well?

Re: The Guitar and Other Machines
Back in stock!!!! You won't get a decent-sized basic pedalboard cheaper as far as I can tell. It's built like a tank too. I've got three of them.
https://gorillastands.co.uk/products/gorilla-pedal-board-stand
They're also on Amazon at the same price.
Don't forget this stuff https://www.amazon.co.uk/UPXDUMI-Multipurpose-Adhesive-Suitable-Industrial/dp/B0DPHW3W68?th=1
And as the pedalboard is so cheap you should probably find the money for one of these too. https://www.amazon.co.uk/STRICH-Isolated-High-current-Noiselessly-SPS-60/dp/B0DMK7D8SV
Those last two are only examples, but they're both good choices, especially the power supply.

Re: The Guitar and Other Machines
Looks like Gorilla stands are only available in the UK.
No hurry with a pedalboard for now I'll see if I can tidy the layout up a bit.
In theory I now have the essentials so can now concentrate on acquiring the necessary skills.
Oh damn - now he's got a Pitch Shifter in there

Re: The Guitar and Other Machines
Keyboards - no. I can fumble with them but have never learnt properly, similar to guitar in that chords have always baffled me.
At school, I began on Clarinet, then Flute and then Cello - where I discovered that things with strings were what I really liked.
Also singing in choirs since age 8 has taught me to sight-read sheet music, a talent which is still very handy as I hardly ever practice choral pieces outside the rehearsals.
