I see it more as a convenient way of describing a band's style.

These days 'Prog' is mostly used for groups who can actually play theit instruments well and do long, radio-unfriendly numbers - so that would include names like: Dream Theater, Marillion, Spock's Beard, Enchant, Anathema, Tesseract, Porcupine Tree, Big Big Train, et al.

For Curved Air fans there is a new release coming soon (from the Burning Shed site)

Tapestry of Propositions

The first volume of the Curved Air Rarities Series comprises an hour long version of the 1970 Francis Monkman composed classic Propositions (from the band's debut release).

Featuring 17 live improvisations that have developed out of the piece, the interpretations have been edited together to create a suite.

A glorious example of Curved Air at its most unfettered and adventurous.

'If it's got more than three chords, it's jazz', as Lou Reed put it.

Hippies mostly liked prog. I know, I was there at the time, when you were just a worried look on your father's face.
Yep, that was my thought as well. I remember Led Zep being in the progressive section in Andy's Records in Peterborough.

In a way, they were I think, because they tied so many different styles together to make the result their own, as well taking huge influence and paying 'homage' from old black? blues music. I'm so glad they did, as threads pointing out the original influences to classic Zep tracks have shown me the beauty in these originals, which I think would have been all but buried had Zep brought new life to them.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

I always thought this man to be the king of Prog. Looks like a normal hippy here before he went daft.
