I like that a lot Dave. There's definitely a large dollop of Tangerine Dream in there.

For those who enjoy great musicians playing great music - track this one down.

Soft Machine Legacy - Live at the New Morning.

Image

This is a 2-disc set issued on the Inakustik label - Inakustik being a German audio company well-known for their cables.
It was very cheaply priced and I wasn't expecting much - well, I'm pleasantly surprised.

Long after Soft Machine had dissolved, some members decided to get together and start touring again. John Marshall (drums), Hugh Hopper (bass), Elton Dean (saxes & Fender Rhodes) and John Etheridge (guitars). This album was recorded in the early 2000's and is dedicated to Elton Dean who died shortly afterwards. Hugh Hopper also passed away some time ago and their respective places have been filled in by Theo Travis and Roy Babbington.

This is a high-energy performance as befitting the Softs live. The saxes wail and the guitar rips into Fripp-esque abstract shards at times. Hopper and Marshall lock together and push the envelope as far as it can go. This is no rehash of past glories but old friends flying out on a new musical adventure.

I've also been listening a lot to a later studio album with the newer line-up 'Burden of Proof'. Which is another excellent slice of top-notch Jazz-Rock and shouldn't be overlooked by those who like the ECM work of names like Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal.

... and did I mention that the recording quality is really, really good.

XTC

Remember them 'Senses working overtime', 'Making Plans for Nigel' back in the electro-pop days.

I went to Toronto about 10 years ago and came across a record shop - mostly CDs. The owner introduced me to Jane Sibbery. I asked if he had any vinyl - 'Oh, I've got XTCs latest' - bought it, enjoyed it and then sort of forgot about them again. Yesterday I came back with an assortment of 80s stuff - 'Tropical Gangsters', a Human League compilation and Skylarking (1986) remastered version.

Now, the production is definitely not what I usually go for - it's sounds a bit overdone to me - but I enjoyed every minute of it and, in particular, this christian existentialist howl
