I've been on the look-out for a 2nd hand P90SA (or similar volume control with boutique resistors), but not seen any. The P50SA will make an OK stop-gap for £166.
Had a dead channel when I tried the "CD" input earlier. It's working fine on the "Aux" input now. I'll test it again tomorrow and contact the seller, as he did describe it as "Immaculate" - which it is cosmetically.
I don't have anything to compare it against as my LDR has faded over time (max volume wasn't loud enough). Apart from comparing it against nothing for stuff that hasn't been recorded at too hot a level. Nothing sounds a little bit better.
Trouble is, nothing in this case, gives you no instantaneous volume adjustment. It also requires the use of a power amp with a very low amount of gain and speakers that are an easy load, but not too sensitive.
I realise, that is why I make and recommend that people use a passive pre-amp. The interesting thing is how different passives sound different, where as the objectivists say it can't be. I even think my case design and material influences that, but can't prove it apart from with ears.
You know, Doc, I've often wondered; Do you feel disappointed, angry or even hurt when your excellent equipment that you've spent years developing and tuning often sells for such paltry amounts on the S/H market?
I guess it is a possible shoe-horn into the whole world of NVA for the new owner but I still think I'd be a bit miffed.
