In my opinion, your last sentence is particularly profound; especially in the reference to Islam. It seems to me that all religions are methods to control the masses and have been the cause of most, if not all, of the wars past and present. However, most religions seem to have evolved and appear to be relatively harmless (if only for the beliefs of the deluded and brainwashed) except for one; which is currently the scourge of mankind and the current cause of global unrest.

I prefer to think that in most cases religions have been corrupted to control the masses rather than believe that's the reason they came into being. Admittedly, some cults are hatched that way, but then they only want people to think that their founders are divine, for the free sex and the tax exemptions.
