Spock's Beard: 'High Voltage Live 2011'

Image

There is a whole series of these 'High Voltage' live discs which appear to be very cheaply available. All recorded at the UK's High Voltage festival and featuring many classic rock names: Argent, Thin Lizzy, Asia to name but a few. The one I have (a Marillion disc is on its way) is from American Prog stalwarts Spock's Beard and it's a good 'un

This is a direct-from-the-mixing-desk recording, so no overdubs, no polishing, no removing the enthusiastic crowd cheers. In short - an excellent, un-edited live performance full of vitality, humour and great musicianship - these guys can really play! Interesting for the fans is the chance to hear current singer Ted Leonard (Enchant) tackle a couple of older SB numbers like 'Doorway' and 'The Light' where the band is joined by founder member / singer Neal Morse, who stays on for the closing number - the acoustic CSN-like 'June'.

The Beard also feature one of the best keyboard players around - Ryo Okumoto, a master on synths and Hammond. They have been going for 25 years and remain at the top of the classic rock / prog acts. Bits of Yes, Genesis, Kansas but mainly themselves.

A feast.

Spock's Beard - Live at High Voltage 2011 (official) - 04. The Light feat. Neal Morse

PS- these discs come with a second, enhanced CD of extra's like backstage interviews . Nice.

Have been listening to a few new Tangerine Dream purchases on cd, Rubycon, Stratoshere, Force Majeure, Ricochet and Phaedra as well as Ulrich Schnauss (Thanks DSJR) but today dug out Sting's oldie, The Dream of the Blue Turtles on vinyl. Great music and recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4CQJTGw72I

As a teenager in the 70's...I loved lying in my darkened bedroom late at night, headphones on, listening to Phaedra. Blew my 17 year old mind!

My Riverside 6CD set Reality Dream Trilogy arrived yesterday from Poland. I've been steadily working my way through it, and I'm really enjoying it.

Back in 1983, my musical life was once again changed forever -

The Blue Nile, A Walk Across The Rooftops

- A trip to Linn allowed me to hear three tracks from this record (side one) straight from 30IPS half inch analogue master tapes. Only the remastered CD from a few years ago comes close.... 'Rags to Riches' holds a special place and I'll never forget hearing 'Regret' from the master tape a few years later, while it was being cut to lacquer - put me off vinyl for years and the LP12 from then on, so poor was the vinyl 12" 45rpm end product...

"...I write a new book everyday
A love theme for the wilderness
A love theme...

STAY!"

"Can this be all we will desire, straw houses in the promised land?"
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...
