Re: Krautrock - an appreciation
From what I remember a lot of the 'Krautrock' bands who are actually German dislike the term intensely. A Kraut, by the way, is not only a derogatory term for a German, but it's also German for cabbage...which was the original insult. Now, just to throw a spanner into the works, what about the term 'Motorik?' Motorik was the name invented (by English-speaking journalists yet again) to describe the repetitive, driving, almost robotic 4/4 beat, that backed 'Krautrock' tracks. So by that definition, if it ain't 4/4 with a driving beat it ain't Krautrock.
My personal opinion is that calling non-German bands Krautrockers is as daft as profiling English bands as Americana, which seems to be popular now. Just my opinion, obviously.

Re: Krautrock - an appreciation
The term "Krautrock" wasn't invented in Germany and wasn't meant as a compliment, but afterwards was taken over, and now stands for a lot of German bands, mostly of the seventies. When we take the definition of the 4/4 beat, then Hawkwind for example has to be called "Krautrock", too. But nobody would ever do so. And back to the similarities of Prog and Krautrock: Both were leaving stepped out pathes at their time and did something unheard before.

I listen to a typical Krautrock record at the moment - CAN Monstermovie - to proof the 4/4 theory and have to say, yes it's true and a lot of fun!

Jaki Liebezei is the perfect example of Motorik.Hannes-Gregor wrote: ↑Wed May 16, 2018 8:31 pm I listen to a typical Krautrock record at the moment - CAN Monstermovie - to proof the 4/4 theory and have to say, yes it's true and a lot of fun!
Let's throw another 'label' into the mix. Hawkwind are Space Rockers.

Re: Krautrock - an appreciation
Liebezeit was astonished to have CAN labelled as so-called Krautrock
Reichel (Rattles,Machines, etc) disliked the term, as did Amon Duul's Weinzierl.
Faust & - I think it was NEU - use the word in their song title, but I suppose disparagingly.Refusing to accept. Jokeingly. *
* is there even such a word??
