Re: Recommend me a good book.
I've read all Stuart Maconie's books bar The Pie at Night, which is next on the list. They are all very entertaining.
I've also just re-bought Joseph Wambaugh's The Choir Boys. I first read this in 1977 on a coach coming back from Athens to London. Very dark but it's also the funniest book I can recall ever reading. Hope it doesn't disappoint on a second reading.

Re: Recommend me a good book.
It all depends on what interests you most as they are all different. If you are into murder mysteries it is a no brainer. The Christmas Goat is quite light reading and loosly based on my wife's previous experiences and observations. Eden's last child is a lot darker and addresses homophobia. All three give a good insight into life in Kenya.

Re: Recommend me a good book.
I read the opening pages of 'The Murder of Onesmuss' as ebook. Might give that a try.

'The Glass Cell' by Patricia Highsmith, a psychological thriller, which I read (almost in one sitting) whilst on holiday, and 'Smallbone Deceased' by Michael Gilbert, a traditional British whodunnit, which I also read on holiday (it rains a lot in the Lake District).

Re: Recommend me a good book.
Some great recommendations Slinger. They sound right up my street.
I could suggest my own modest contribution: but it would be extraordinarily tedious for most.
More seriously, Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning by Jonah Goldberg is an interesting read.

Re: Recommend me a good book.
Another series I enjoyed was the Merrily Watkins books, by Phil Rickman.
http://www.philrickman.co.uk/merrily/
Not overly spooky/ghosty stuff but obviously the paranormal weaves its way through the stories. They're more P.D. James than James Herbert.PHIL RICKMAN:
‘This is my attempt to do something different because writers should. If you don’t, it’s just another day job.
Merrily Watkins has what is very much a night job. She’s Deliverance Consultant or Advisor on the Paranormal for the Diocese of Hereford. Or Exorcist, as it used to be known.
It’s a real job; there’s at least one in every diocese in the UK. They work with psychiatrists, social workers… and also the police. Inevitably, in this series, this is the aspect of the job that predominates.
And their own beliefs are often tested. There are few certainties. The borderline between psychology and the unexplained is often laid out in barbed wire.
Each novel stands alone. There are threads, but you can pick them up. You don’t have to read them in order.

Re: Recommend me a good book.
If you like an easy read like me, anything by Dick Francis, and no you do not have to like horse racing.
Re: Recommend me a good book.
You simply can't trust reviews.........
How many times have we all been told "It's great" only to discover it was in fact shit !!!
And Visa versa.
