It isn't cheap for sure. But you've more flexibility.

Cutting the top plate is a much cheaper option.

Why would you bother. Just get a deck that works. When the time arrives would be more than happy to share :epopc:

Using the guts of a Lenco, modding the top plate and fitting it in a better plinth can give you 'super deck' sound at a fraction of the price.

"Super deck" .What do you consider those to be? As for lencos as good as they are , plinth ,arm ,bearing ,etc ,etc to get to "the sound " you like I hope its worth it.

Better than an LP12 or a Rega 10, to my ears...and I sold my £3k WTL Versalex after hearing a well fettled Lenco.

Source a serviceable example, do the work yourself and you will spend somewhere around £200, plus whatever arm and cartridge you want to put on it.

Go to an expert like Vinyl-Ant and you're still only looking at around £400 to £600 depending on the exact spec you want. That's Rega 3 money, and the modded Lenco pisses all over the Rega (and any old LP12, for that matter). Just my opinion - having owned them all.

I reckon the Lenco is (still) the biggest bargain around.

YMMV

Well said. After all its about what "you hear" rather than what we have been told by anyone. Would still put my 82 LP12 up against any of them, even with a cheap arm and cartridge. With one proviso, same amp, speakers, same monetary considerations. Not sure what my GL75 cost, but I'm sure its a lot less than current value, as is my linn. Still think GL75 is inferior.IMO

Lose the original Lenco arm, mod the top plate and put it in a good, heavyweight plinth...then compare it to the LP12, using the same arm and cartridge.
